REVEALED: What happened in the Chelsea dressing room following Kepa-Sarri incident

1

Last night’s Carabao Cup Final between Chelsea and Manchester City had one of the most dramatic events of the season. With the match nearing penalties, Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri was about to bring on Willy Caballero for Kepa. However, Kepa was adamant and decided to stay on the pitch which angered Sarri.

Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport has explained what happened inside the Chelsea dressing room following the match. The newspaper wrote,”Everybody was waiting for Kepa to arrive in the mixed zone of Wembley but before he came off an English journalist who knows Spanish very well walked inside the Blues’ dressing room to decide the goalkeeper’s version to give to journalists. ”

Kepa then told that the incident was a misunderstanding. The newspaper added, “Is anybody going to believe it?”

According to reports in England, Chelsea will not give any sort of punishment to goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga who ignored Maurizio Sarri’s orders to come off the pitch in last night’s Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

With penalties nearing, Maurizio Sarri was about to substitute Kepa for Willy Caballero. However, the most expensive goalkeeper in the world refused to come off the pitch which angered Sarri. The match went to penalties and Kepa did save a shot from Leroy Sane. However, his teammates Jorginho and David Luiz missed their respective spot-kicks and Chelsea lost the shootout 4-3.

Following the match, Sarri said that the incident was a misunderstanding but Kepa conducted himself in the wrong way. Kepa also said that he meant no disrespect to Sarri.

However, it looks like the club will not punish Kepa. A spokesman for the club said that Sarri and Kepa want to put the incident behind them as quickly as possible.

However, it will be interesting to see how the Chelsea board take Maurizio Sarri’s situation into account as he eventually relented and allowed Kepa to stay on the pitch while many believe he should have forced the Spaniard to come off.

Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger feels that Maurizio Sarri and Kepa Arrizabalaga should have a discussion over last night;s substitution fiasco at Wembley.

During the dying moments of extra time, Maurizio Sarri was about to bring on Willy Caballero and substitute Kepa. However, the most expensive keeper in the world refused to come off the field.

Following the end of extra time, Sarri was about to have a word with Kepa but Rudiger intervened. Kepa eventually saved a penalty in the shootout but sadly, Chelsea lost 4-3 and Manchester City were crowned League Cup champions for a 6th time.

Following the match, both Sarri and Kepa played down on the incident, calling it a misunderstanding.

Rudiger said about the incident, “This is something the coach and the player have to speak about. I cannot say much about it. I think, for sure, the coach and the goalkeeper will speak about it and everything will be fine.”

The Kepa Arrizabalaga incident has spread like wildfire on all fronts.

The goalkeeper refused to be subbed off last night despite the manager very clearly wanting him to come off. His unprofessional behavior saw Chelsea make a mockery of themselves in public and the goalkeeper is now in the middle of the firing line.

However, another not-so-serial trophy winner Jermain Jenas has passed on his ‘expert’ opinion saying that Sarri should have shown more class when defeated.

“His players have done him proud today,” Jenas told BBC Radio 5 live. “They are an inferior team to Manchester City now and they took them all the way. For him not to be congratulating the opposition or consoling his players shows a lack of class for me.

“The fact he went inside and was not out there with his players is one thing, but it has to be infuriating for one of your players to categorically tell you to ‘do one’ and say I’m staying on this pitch.

“This is a huge blemish. It all boils down to what is going on between Sarri and his players. That does not happen – there’s a lack of respect somewhere along the line.”

Kepa Arrizabalaga’s unprofessional behavior has called for many fans and pundits to pour in their opinion. One such man is Chris Sutton who wants Kepa to be gone from the club for setting such a disgraceful example for footballers.

“After this, Kepa should never play for Chelsea again,” he told the Daily Mail.

“To point-blank refuse to be substituted is a disgrace. It’s disgusting. I have never seen anything like it on a football field.

“It is a complete lack of respect from a player towards his manager.

“What kind of an example is this for youngsters up and down the country playing grassroots football?

“The incident was damning for Maurizio Sarri. If this had happened at any club I played for during my career, we would have dragged the goalkeeper off the pitch ourselves.

“Why did none of the Chelsea players do that at Wembley?

“How can Sarri now stand in the dressing room at Stamford Bridge and expect Kepa — or indeed any of the Chelsea players — to carry out his instructions?

“Kepa also showed a lack of respect to Willy Caballero and that relationship will surely be difficult to mend.

“Regardless of whether this is the end for Sarri, Kepa’s actions were inexcusable.”

John Terry feels the confrontation between Maurizio Sarri and Kepa Arrizabalaga could further have an impact on the manager.

Sarri prepared Willy Caballero for the final few minutes as the Chelsea keeper was visibly uncomfortable after suffering a cramp. The Spanish custodian was told to come off but refused to leave the field.

Despite repeated attempts, Kepa kept on insisting and the manager went on to call off his substitutions. It remains to be seen whether the club takes any disciplinary actions against the youngster but Sarri definitely was not happy with the incident.

Terry who is regarded to be a Chelsea legend laments Kepa’s arrogance. “It leaves Sarri in a tough place – I’m surprised he didn’t force him to come off.

“It will be interesting how it pans out in the next 24 hours for the club.

“It’s not the end of it – it’s a cloud over a really good Chelsea performance especially with what’s happened of late, as the results and performances haven’t been good enough. It’s disappointing – let’s see what happens now.”

“If I was in there [dressing room] I’d be expecting the manager to come in and deal with it instantly.”

Former Chelsea manager says Hazard would excel at Real Madrid

Former Chelsea and Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho believes that Chelsea talisman Eden Hazard can excel at Real Madrid.

There has been a lot of speculation about Eden Hazard’s future at Chelsea for several months now. It all began in May when hazard expressed his desire to play for Real Madrid. The Belgium captain reiterated this statement during the World Cup. It looked like Hazard would join Real during the summer of 2018. However, no move materialised and Hazard stayed at Chelsea.

For a while, Hazard has repeatedly said that he is confused between staying at Chelsea and moving to Madrd. Lately, Hazard said that he has made up his mind about his future but didn’t elaborate.

Mourinho who has managed Real Madrid for a few years, has an idea of the club’s footballing style and having also managed Hazard at Chelsea, believes the 28-year old can do well at Real.

Speaking to DAZN, Mourinho said, “Eden’s ambitions… playing at Chelsea his whole life or going out to a giant like Real Madrid? I can’t tell you, because I haven’t talked to him for quite a while.

Let’s talk about talent. Does he have the talent to play for Real Madrid? He does. Does he have the personality to wear a super heavy shirt and play in front of a crowd like the Bernabeu? He has personality, yes.”

Hazard faced the heartbreak of losing last night’s Carabao Cup final against Manchester City on penalties. Hazard calmly converted his penalty with a Panenka but his teammates Jorginho and David Luiz missed their shots as City won the shootout 4-3, thus winning their 6th League Cup title.

Chelsea boss wanted to have Willy Cabellaro in the goal for the last few minutes as Kepa was having a problem with a slight crap. Caballero was ready to come on but to everyone’s surprise, the Spanish keeper refused to leave the pitch.

A confusing situation got created as Blues defender David Luiz also tried to make him understand the situation. But the former Athletic Bilbao man was adamant to his stand and Caballero went on to return to his seat in the dugout.

This created an angry atmosphere as Sarri was visibly furious and almost left the stadium.

Kepa said, “I know if you see it from outside, I don’t know how it went out, it is not the best image

“I have spoken with the boss. I think it was misunderstood.

“I understand that on television, on social media, they’re talking about this but I am here to explain it, to say that it wasn’t my intention to go against the manager.

“We have spoken now, and I was only trying to say I’m fine. He thought I wasn’t fine. It was in tense moments, with a lot happening.”

“In no moment was it my intention to disobey, or anything like that with the boss

Just that it was misunderstood, because I had been attended to by the medics twice, and he thought that I wasn’t in condition to continue.

“This was nothing to do with the problems I had this week, with [hamstring] it wasn’t that. And, well, it was misunderstood.

“Because he thought I couldn’t continue, and – fundamentally – I was trying to say that physically I was fine.”

Maurizio Sarri Insists He Misunderstood The Kepa Arrizabalaga Situation

Maurizio Sarri refused to emphasize much after Kepa Arrizabalaga defied his orders to stay on the pitch.

With the penalty shootout approaching, Sarri decided to bring in Willy Caballero as Kepa appeared to be struggling with an injury. But the Spanish custodian showed resistant as he refused to be subbed off causing rage in the Chelsea bench.

Despite Sarri’s repeated attempt to bring back the player the summer arrival stood tall in his stance and went on to play the full game as Chelsea lost in the shootout to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final.

Sarri’s anger was pretty evident as the Italian almost left the field before reappearing to the touchline. Sarri refuted all the claims but made it clear he wanted to discontinue Arrizabalaga. “It was a big misunderstanding. I understood the goalkeeper had cramp, and was unable to go to the pens, but the problem was not cramp, so he was able to go to the penalties.

“As I say to the goalkeeper, he understood that I asked for a change for his physical problem, he said, ‘I haven’t a physical problem’ and so he was right I think.

“I realised after when the doc arrived to the bench, the goalkeeper with a little problem, I wanted Caballero ready.”

Maurizio Sarri furious after Kepa refuses to be substituted

During the dying moments of extra-time during tonight’s Carabao Cup encounter between Chelsea and Manchester City, Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri was about to make a final substitution.

With penalties nearing, Sarri was keen to bring on the more experienced Willy Caballero and replace Kepa. However, Kepa was determined to stay on the field.

Caballero was ready to come on but Kepa was adamant. Despite being told to get off the pitch by Sarri, Gianfranco Zola and David Luiz, the Spaniard did not do so.

Even though this was a strong show of character by the Spaniard, Sarri was totally miffed with the World’s most expensive goalkeeper. In the end, Sarri decided to let Kepa stay. However, he did not shy away from displaying his frustration.

The match eventually went to penalties and Kepa did save a penalty from Leroy Sane. However, Jorginho and David Luiz were both unable to convert their respective penalties and Manchester City won the penalty shootout 4-3.

Thus, Manchester City win their 6th League Cup title while Chelsea remain trophyless this season as of now. The Europa League is the only tournament Chelsea have a shot of winning. The Blues next play a Premier League fixture against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday.
