Frank Lampard took charge of his first Chelsea match this week.

Chelsea were held to a draw by inferior opponents and Lampard pointed to Chelsea’s fitness as a major issue for the result.

The new boss took over and has brought in a huge squad with him to the pre-season. He played a largely inexperienced and youthful squad and the youngsters delivered well.

“Fitness was our issue, we’ve been working hard on it, even this morning,” said Lampard.

“Fitness was always going to be an issue against a team that’s halfway through their season. We certainly pushed ourselves to the limit.

“The quicker we get there the better. It’s about individuals getting fit. Some of the young lads were really good.

“We want to get a level of fitness and intensity in their game.”

“I’ve enjoyed it, we’ve got great support over here,” said the former Derby County manager.

“It was a tough game for us, we’ve only been here for a few days. But I’m pleased with how we got on.

“I’ve been pleased with the players’ attitude since I arrived last week.”

Will Lampard’s team improve over the season?

Frank Lampard’s perfect playing eleven

Frank Lampard took over at Chelsea last week.

He is expected to lead the team to successful season with the players at his disposal. He does not have too many experienced first team players and hence Lampard will have to be smart about how he chooses his players. Here is a look at how Frank might line up his team.

Formation: 4-3-3

Defence:

GOALKEEPER:

Kepa Arrizabalaga: The Spaniard joined the club last season on a record deal. Arrizabalaga joined Chelsea from Spanish club Athletic Bilbao after Thibaut Courtois joined Real Madrid by forcing a move out of Chelsea.

He played a brilliant debut season at Chelsea although he got involved in one negative controversy, the Carabao Cup final incident when he refused to come off. However, otherwise he has shown great growth and is one of the finer keepers in the English Premier League at this very young age.

RIGHT-BACK:

Cesar Azpilicueta: He is expected to be the club captain now with the departure of Gary Cahill and Dave deserves every bit of it. Since joining the club in 2012, he has shown great discipline, hard work and patience to develop and mature himself into one of the best defenders all across Europe.

Azpi is undeniably solid in defence and versatile enough to play anywhere his team needs him to be. He also can cross really well and play more than 55 matches a season with apparent ease. He needs to be at the club and on the pitch to marshal the Lampard army.

CENTRE-BACK:

Antonio Rudiger: The young German defender has risen greatly in the last two years. He was signed under the Antonio Conte reign and has shown great promise since his debut season. He is technically brilliant, has great physical strength and a good control of the ball.

He is still relatively young. has a good sense of tackling and can become one of the leaders in the Chelsea defence because of his balanced aggression and composure.

CENTRE-BACK:

David Luiz: The Brazilian is a senior player in the club now. This is his second spell in the club. He has played consistently under Maurizio Sarri last season and was one of the central players in the Sarriball system due to his play on the ball.

The Brazilian is over 30 and towards the end of his spell at Chelsea. However, under Lampard their will be more to prove as Luiz will need to take charge as well in defence. It remains to be seen if he is chosen over Christensen, but he certainly might get the nod due to the inexperience of the Chelsea squad.

LEFT-BACK:

Emerson: The Brazilian was another signing of the Antonio Conte era. However, he failed to break into the squad in the early days, due to the brilliant form of Marcos Alonso.

However, over the years, Alonso’s form has dipped and his defensive frailty has been exposed. He is now being put behind Emerson who is slightly more dynamic and energetic than Alonso.

Midfield:

HOLDING MIDFIELDER:

N’Golo Kante: Most Chelsea fans will be looking forward to this change as Kante was played out of position for an entire year by Sarri. Kante is currently the world’s best holding midfielder and his Two Premier Leagues, one FA Cup and one FIFA World Cup trophy all in the span of three years stands testimony to the fact that in all these teams, he was one of the most crucial players.

Being played out of position by Sarri, Kante will most possibly return to his initial position.

RIGHT CENTRAL MIDFIELDER:

Jorginho: He was signed under Maurizio Sarri as the key signing for the system he would play. He did make an impact in terms of being the marshall on the field who would dictate the play but his defensive frailty and occupying the Kante position meant that a lot more was expected of him and fans turned on him quickly.

However, there is no denying the sheer talent he has and Lampard would want to use him on a slightly more advanced role given his passing range and ability to control the game.

LEFT CENTRAL MIDFIELDER:

Mateo Kovacic: The former Real Madrid midfielder was signed by Chelsea this season after a season of loan at Stamford Bridge. The Croatian played over 50 games for the Blues and even though he did not score a goal, he was very impressive in the games.

He has a lot of energy in midfield, can tackle, can pass and can run with the ball. He is definitely a different dimension of player who can add a new kind of threat in midfield in terms of dragging defenders out of position.

Attack:

LEFT WING FORWARD:

Willian: The much coveted Hazard position will be covered by Willian now, the senior most attacking player in terms of experience at the club. He is the most dangerous wing player Chelsea has and he will be given the similar license that Hazard had at Stamford Bridge.

RIGHT WING FORWARD:

Pulisic: The golden boy from American football joined Chelsea this season. The winger is expected to become the star player Hazard was at Chelsea and given his young age, he can be expected to achieve great things at the club.

He played a brilliant tournament at the Gold Cup and is now expected to carry the form on at Chelsea.

CENTRE-FORWARD:

Olivier Giroud: Even at the age of 32, he will be expected to lead the attack,
given Chelsea’s shortage of strikers up top. He however, does a brilliant job in linking up play and can be expected to be a leader on the pitch.

Azpilicueta talks about having Lampard back at Chelsea

Chelsea skipper Cesar Azpilicueta seems very pleased to have his former teammate Frank Lampard back at Chelsea.

Lampard joined Chelsea as their manager just days back and his tenure began with a 1-1 draw against Bohemians at Dublin.

Azpilicueta feels that Lampard will have an impact on the Chelsea players during his managerial career. The Spaniard said, “It is true that last season, for periods, we didn’t give the fans what they expected.

“Our performances were not good enough. We turned it around and won the Europa League but you can see that this season all of the fans are very happy we have the gaffer back at the Bridge.

“Now we have to give it back by working hard on the pitch, by winning games. We are very happy to have him with us. I can’t add anything to his career at Chelsea as a player. But, over his first week in training, I’ve seen the way he wants to play, the way he wants us to feel the shirt, the way he wants us to train every day, it is something special.”

“He was here for a very long and very successful period, and always set an example: how he wanted to break every record or improve himself in every session. We have to be grateful and feel the passion for the shirt. We are very excited and the only way we can carry it on is by winning together, getting the feeling back of being all together as a club.

We have to take responsibility and know that there are a lot of things [going on] around us, but we have to work hard to get better.”

After drawing 1-1 against Bohemians, Chelsea will hope to put on a better performance when they take on St. Patrick’s Athletic.

Frank Lampard admitted that his team is lacking in the fitness department after the surprise 1-1 draw against Bohemians last night.

It was the 41-year-old’s first game in charge of Chelsea and he has already discovered the one major issue he needs to address.

After the game, he told the press, “Fitness was our issue, we’ve been working hard on it, even this morning.

“Fitness was always going to be an issue against a team that’s halfway through their season. We certainly pushed ourselves to the limit.

“The quicker we get there the better. It’s about individuals getting fit. Some of the young lads were really good. We want to get a level of fitness and intensity in their game.”

“I’ve enjoyed it, we’ve got great support over here. It was a tough game for us, we’ve only been here for a few days. But I’m pleased with how we got on,” Lampard added. “I’ve been pleased with the players’ attitude since I arrived last week.”

Michy Batshuayi opened the scoring for the Blues but the hosts answered back through Eric Malloy’s late goal.

Chelsea are due to face St Patrick’s Athletic on Saturday.

Frank Lampard said that his first game as Chelsea manager was a good workout for the club.

Chelsea began their pre-season campaign with a draw against Irish club Bohemians at Dublin.

Michy Batshuayi put Chelsea ahead after just 8 minutes after cashing in on a pass from Kenedy. Chelsea had several scoring opportunities but could not extend their lead.

During the last minutes of the game, Bohemians equalised thanks to Eric Molloy.

Following the match, Lampard told Chelsea TV: “It was a tough game for us, we haven’t been back for long. There was a bit of pressure on the lads, we’ve been working them hard so I’m pleased with the outcome.

Fitness was our issue, we worked them hard this morning.I wanted to stretch them a bit and put them under pressure, it’s what pre-season is about.

The quicker we get to the level we want, the better obviously. We wanted to win the game, but it’s not about that. It’s about individuals getting fit and pushing themselves to the limit.”

Chelsea’s next pre-season game is against St.Patrick’s Athletic at Dublin on Saturday.

Former Chelsea star Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink was far from impressed with Chelsea’s first pre-season match and feels Lampard will have to make some decisions over the futures of some of the youngsters.

Frank Lampard’s first match as Chelsea manager ended in a 1-1 draw against Bohemians. Chelsea took an early lead thanks to Michy Batshauyi and it seemed that Batshuayi’s goal decided the game.

However, a late goal from Eric Molloy levelled the match for Bohemians.

Barrng the Spanish duo of Pedro and Cesa Azpilicueta, Lampard fielded Chelsea loanees and players who barely played for Chelsea last season. These included Willy Caballero, Kenedy, Ethan Ampadu, Danny Drinkwater, Kasey Palmer, Conor Gallagher, Dujon Sterling and many more who appeared during the second half.

Following the match, Hasselbaink stated, “They lost the ball way too easy. Players were having too many touches, sometimes seven, eight touches and it slows the game down. It will be a lesson for Frank to see players and in a way it will make his mind up.

“[Moving the ball fast] is his idea of how he wants to play the game. The majority of successful teams do move the ball quickly. We saw today, especially in the second half, certain players were dwelling a little bit too much on the ball. They didn’t have a solution before they had the ball.

“It might be that it’s pre-season, it might be that they’re not fit yet and it will come. For some it might be a little too much. That is for Frank to figure out, who those players are and who he will go further with.

That’s why those games are so important.”

Chelsea’s next pre-season friendly is against St. Patrick’s Athletic at Dublin on Saturday.

Pedro joined Chelsea in the 2015-16 season. And since then, he has worked under Jose Mourinho, Guus Hiddink, Antonio Conte, Maurizio Sarri and now Frank Lampard.

Asked for his verdict on the first few days of Lampard’s reign, he told Sky Sports News: “It’s very hard work, high intensity, pressing a lot without the ball. When you have the ball move it quick.

“For us it’s very good to work with Frank. He’s a legend at this club. Also his coaches are very good with good ideas.”

“It’s normal for the first game of pre-season,” he said. “It’s only five days of training and for this reason it’s normal to draw.

“We need to improve a lot but it’s good to be on the pitch and have the young players as well.

“It’s normal to not be in the best condition. We’ve been training really hard with Frank this week and this is good for us.”

Pedro is one of the senior players in the squad but his extremely high work rate still has ensured that the winger continues make the team under every manager.  It remains to be seen how well he does under Lampard.

Chelsea began their Frank Lampard era with a draw. However, the Blues boss was happy with the effort of the team and wants them to keep improving.

He said after the game: ‘Fitness was our issue, obviously. We’ve been working them hard and worked them hard this morning, I wanted to stretch them and put them under pressure a bit as that’s what pre-season is all about. The quicker we get to the level we want the better for us.

‘It was good competition for us, we would have wanted the win obviously as you always do but it’s not about that at this point, it’s about individuals getting fit and pushing themselves to the limit and I thought some of the performances, particularly from the young lads were really good. ‘I’ve been really happy [with their application].

I’ve got a way that I work, that we work as staff and we’ve brought that in, it’s hard and taxing on the players. We wanted to get straight into them and we have to to get that level of fitness into our game and I’m pleased with how they’ve taken that on.’

Chelsea Fans Urge Lampard To Choose Youngster Over Jorginho

Chelsea Fans Urge Lampard To Choose Youngster Over Jorginho

Chelsea fans are urging Frank Lampard to overlook Jorginho for the number 8 spot and hand it over the club’s academy product, Mason Mount.

The 20-year-old scored an outstanding freekick in training which amazed the Blues faithful enough to make this plea.

One Chelsea fan said, “Jorginho’s replacement,” after watching Mount curl the ball around Willy Cabellero, leaving the goalkeeper helpless.

Another said, “New contract. New era Lampard. New no.8. Please and thanks.”

“New Frank in the making ahhh love ittt,” said another Blues fan.

“Give him that number 8 already,” another added on Twitter, while another said, “Best be a starter next season.”

“We might actually have someone good at set-pieces,” claimed one of the West Londoners.

Now, of course, Mount’s credit is not drawn from one simple freekick in training. He was really impressive in the Derby County ranks last season, scoring 9 and laying out 4 assists.

The midfielder was instrumental in the Rams’ run for Premier League promotion under Lampard. His development has progressed well with him spending the 2017/18 campaign with Dutch outfit, Vitesse.

Jorginho, on the other hand, struggled to impress term after tying down a £57m move from Napoli. He only collected 2 goals and set up zero assists in over 50 appearances under Maurizio Sarri.

Now, Frank Lamapard has returned to Chelsea with an open mind of giving every player a fresh chance. However, the 41-year-old is also eager to promote youth talent and we might see a different midfield trio in the upcoming campaign.

Who Frank Lampard Might Pick To Replace Eden Hazard

Who Frank Lampard Might Pick To Replace Eden Hazard

Frank Lampard believes Christian Pulisic has ‘a lot of potential’, according to football consultant, Ian McGarry.

The new Chelsea manager is expected to try out all his wingers in Eden Hazard’s vacant spot next season. Pulisic is obviously an outright candidate, having been signed for such a tidy but veterans, Pedro and Willian have also been assured of starting out the season in Lampard’s 4-2-3-1 setup.

“As far as I’m told and speaking to people at Chelsea, people close to Frank Lampard, he sees a lot of potential in Pulisic,” McGarry said on The Transfer Window podcast.

“But having lost Hazard, he was very keen to reassure Pedro and Willian that they had his confidence and that he would be relying on them initially, certainly, to begin the season as the wide players in the attacking three and that Pulisic will probably alternate with Mason Mount in the number 10 position, with Mason Mount upfront.

“So it will be very interesting to see how that pans out.

“I think with Hazard obviously in the last few seasons, Pedro and Willian have basically been rotated despite the fact that they’ve got very, very good statistics with regards to goals and assists as well.

“I think it’s gonna be a little bit of the young and the old from Frank Lampard when the season starts, because of the injuries that we’ve already talked about.

“He said himself, I don’t want to be judged on my playing career. I’m a winner. I want to win as a manager as well. I don’t want anyone to give me special treatment regarding the fact of what my playing career was at this club.

“So he’s not a fool in that sense. He’s not simply going to put 11 kids out.

“The advantage he has is that with no transfer availability in this window or indeed January because of the ban, it will be a case that he’ll be able to put young players in the team and then if they learn a lesson by getting thrashed by a team better than them, then he can say ‘well look, these guys have got to learn. This is what it’s about. You can’t expect to win all the time or you can’t expect to win most of the time. Sometimes you get turned over and they have to learn that lesson. And if they’re not in the team they can’t learn that lesson.’

“So I suspect that’s exactly the attitude he’s going to be taking with Chelsea this season coming with regards to the younger players, but he’ll give himself the safety net of still obviously relying on senior professionals with regards to certain positions and ensuring that Chelsea are competitive in all areas.”
