Lampard Not Surprised By Mourinho Attack

Frank Lampard was not taken aback by Jose Mourinho’s accusation of Chelsea players using penalties to their advantage.

Mourinho felt that Chelsea have coerced the officials to get awarded penalties in defence of Harry Kane.

Speaking earlier this week, Mourinho said: “Kane? I think you are confused.

“You could be speaking about some Manchester United players, some Man City players, some Liverpool players, some Chelsea players.”

Chelsea have already had eight penalties this season but Lampard insists none of those were awarded for a player diving inside the box.

“I wasn’t surprised by those comments,” he said. “There have been no incidents of diving at Chelsea this season that I’ve seen.

“But I wasn’t surprised by it, no. I think it’s very normal that managers in and around the clubs challenging sometimes mention others with those statements. It didn’t affect me.”

He added: “I’m not going to tell Jose or any other manager how to do a press conference.

“I think we all know when we watch these penalty decisions, we know what ones are penalties, what ones are dives, ones that are cleverly bought. I don’t want to dwell on it.”

Frank Lampard refusing to rest Timo Werner ahead of Sheffield clash

Chelsea boss unwilling to rest in-from Blues forward Timo Werner.

Frank Lampard was on the verge of resting the £47 million striker but Christian Pulisic’s hamstring problem in the warm-up made him change the decision.

Pulisic will miss out the weekend game against Sheffield United and Werner would likely partner up with Tammy Abraham upfront with whom he’s developing a good partnership.

“I am not going to give the team away but I think it is clear with the Burnley game that I was planning on giving him a rest,” Lampard told reporters at Cobham Training Centre.

“It was more because of the journey to Burnley and the journey to Russia and back.

“Timo has played a lot of games. It is always a balance in my head between players playing a lot of games and enjoying it with finding their way in the team and making relationships, finding their way in the league if they are new in the league.

“I think that has been a big deal for Timo as well. So I have been happy with that point, as we look forward, I will try to manage those minutes to keep him as fresh as I can. At the minute, he is going well so we will see.”

Thiago Silva hailed by Chelsea boss for his influence on the club’s new-found defence.

He has helped the Blues to six clean sheets in his first seven appearances for the club.

“His influence has been huge; even without the language his professionalism has been very clear, that rubs off on players, they respect him,” said Lampard.

“His performances have been very, very good. He manages himself, he trains well, he prepares well, it’s very obvious from him and understandable why he’s had the amazing career he’s had so far.

“And it’s been great to have him as part of the squad.

“I think players look up to him in how he goes about his daily business and how he performs.

“It’s great for younger players, every player in the squad.

“It’s certainly a pleasure to coach and manage a player with that much intensity in wanting to perform at the highest level.

“We’re managing him slightly, but when you look at his performances and how he trains, it’s just been a real positive story so far.

“Long may it continue not just for him but for the influence he has on the team.”

Cech reveals how Chelsea found Mendy

Cech reveals how Chelsea found Mendy

Petr Cech has talked about how Chelsea worked hard to find Mendy!

Cech said: “I gave my input [on Mendy’s signing], because we wanted to add to our goalkeeping group a slightly different type of keeper.

“We have Kepa and Willy Caballero, who every time we needed him was ready to step in and we decided with Kepa going through a difficult moment where things were not happening for him on the pitch, we decided to add to our goalkeeping group and we agreed to bring in Edouard. So far, he’s been doing great.

“In my first eight games [at Chelsea], we had seven clean sheets. If he [Mendy] gets that and makes it better, I will be happy, because the team will do well and we will be winning, and this is ultimately what we want.’

“I have to give credit to Christophe Lollichon who spoke to me about him three-and-a-half years ago when Edouard started playing for Reims. The one thing which is great about his story is obviously his year where, because of the fault of his agent, he was without a club.

“While I was playing at Arsenal, he said, ‘Watch this goalkeeper, he has a very interesting story’. So I started following him.

“Obviously you watch all the other goalkeepers as well. I have watched 30, 40 different goalkeepers over the past year and a half, but I kept following Edouard and you see his evolution and progression every year, it got me the idea when we talked about what we want from a goalkeeper, what we would like to add to our goalkeeping group, his name came to my mind.

“The manager has a big input. The club and the scouting has his input and we all agreed he’s the goalkeeper we should get over.”

Chelsea defender Reece James called up for the national side once again.

The 20-year old defender was sent off in England’s UEFA Nations League game against Denmark which left him suspended for games against Belgium and Iceland.

England manager Gareth Southgate explains his decision on involving James in the squad despite being suspended for the next two games.

Meanwhile, Brighton defender Tariq Lamptey was left without his maiden call-up and will instead head away to the U-21s.

“I think Tariq is progressing very well and will certainly be with the Under-21s this time but Reece is playing at a very high level,” Southgate explained.

“We were very, very impressed with the way he trained every day and how he took his opportunity as a sub – and then with his performance against Denmark where he was arguably our best player.

“We wanted to keep him with us. He needs to learn from what happened at the end of that Denmark game which is not acceptable and has cost him the opportunity to play in some of the qualifiers for us.

“But we were very, very impressed with his club form and to be able to involve him in the game against Ireland is something we wanted to do,” he added.

Tammy Abraham’s performance against Rennes has left Frank Lampard with a selection dilemma.

Tammy Abraham scored Blues’ third goal, tapping the ball home from a Reece James corner.

Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole believes Frank Lampard will have a selection quandary whilst choosing his attacking options.

‘It would have been noted, Chelsea spending £50m on a No.9’ Cole told BT Sport.

‘He [Abraham] kept at it tonight, didn’t he? His movement for the goal was lovely.

‘He didn’t do it in the first half, there was a time when he picked the wrong run but that was excellent.

‘It was a good finish. He’s had to take that on the half volley, open his body up, it’s not easy so it’s a nice one for Tammy.

‘It’s a great problem for Frank because he’s got so many players now making a case.

‘All of the front boys are scoring, midfielders are getting on the ball, he’s given Frank something to think about.’

Frank Lampard has the likes of Christian Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech, Kai Havertz, Mason Mount, and Olivier Giroud battling it out for places in Chelsea’s attack when all are fit.

Frank Lampard Takes Jorginho Off Penalty Duty For Timo Werner

Frank Lampard Takes Jorginho Off Penalty Duty For Timo Werner

Frank Lampard made the tough decision to drop Jorginho’s penalty responsibilities in the 3-0 win over Rennes.

Timo Werner converted twice from the spot as Jorginho watched on.

“We played very well today,” Werner said after the game. “Both penalties were the right decision – the red card was also good for us as it meant we could control the game.

“Before the game, the manager told me that if we got a penalty I should take it. Jorginho is cool with that. I hope I can continue to take them When you want to score 20 or more goals you have to take a few penalties, so I am happy.”

Jorginho had missed a penalty against Krasnodar last week after which Lampard made the switch. He said, “It was not an easy decision (on penalty taker) because Jorginho has been pretty faultless.

“He had missed two recently and Timo came in and scored. I had a word with Jorghino and his answer was perfect, he said he didn’t mind who came in to take them he just wanted to score. Timo came in and scored so I am happy.”

Kai Havertz Tests Positive For Coronavirus After Missing Rennes Clash

Kai Havertz Tests Positive For Coronavirus After Missing Rennes Clash

Chelsea midfielder Kai Havertz has come down with coronavirus.

He missed the Rennes match for the Champions League clash on Sunday after his test results came back positive. Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has confirmed this news.

Havertz shall also be out of the Sheffield United clash on Saturday, along with any upcoming Germany games.

The midfielder, only 21, has been taking some time to get used to being with the Blues but fellow teammate Timo Werner believes he will come out on top soon.

“I know Kai very well and I think he is one of the most talented players in the whole world,” the Chelsea striker said ahead of the match against Rennes.

“He is a young boy, only 21 and he can learn a lot but can already play like a very, very old and wise player. I think up until now he feels very well here.

“A bit like me, we have talked a lot about settling in and he feels he is very happy to be here. In a lot of games he has shown what he can do, what he can bring to the team.

“For Kai it is very important to score, but I think what you can see in his game, he is about a lot more than scoring goals as a midfield player. He plays a lot of key passes, makes a lot of movement for other players.

“He is very talented and feels good. He will get better and better, like me he has come to a new country, language and style of football and has to learn, but until now he plays very good and we will see a lot more good games from him.”

Lampard confident Mendy will continue to exceed expectations

Frank Lampard believes that new goalkeeper signing Edouard Mendy will continue to impress.

The 28 year old has performed brilliantly in the last few matches since he moved from Rennes, making important saves – and saving Chelsea’s goalkeeping situation as a Kepa back up.

However, Lampard is confident that Mendy will deliver more than he is now.

“I am sure he will improve as it is really early days for him at the club he is settling in, still to a degree,” he told media per the Chelsea website.

“I am very confident in him and he has shown great qualities so far and I think there is a lot more to come, with his attitude which is key.

“I have seen how he wants to work, how he wants to be and the humility in him – I think he can go much further in many departments.

“What I have seen in a short period of time with Edouard is a player that has a massive work ethic to train and push himself every day.

“It seems his personality is pretty laid back with a tough edge when it comes to work.

“He has shown his qualities that we brought him into the club for.

“All the feedback was he had a great personality, a strong personality in the dressing room, and everything I heard, all those positives, came true. It seems his personality is pretty laid-back with a tough edge when it comes to work.

“He is very low maintenance, he works hard, he wants to work more, and he is eager to engage with his team-mates and myself.

“He has a smile on his face so it’s a real positive when you have a player that comes in and hits the ground running on the pitch and in the dressing room.”

Timo Werner has praised his national team and club teammate Kai Havertz.

The German duo signed for Chelsea this summer and both have gotten off to exciting starts to their Chelsea careers.

‘I know Kai very well and he is one of the most talented players in the whole world,’ added Werner. ‘He is a young boy, just 21 years old, and he can learn a lot but he already plays like a much older player.

‘We talk a lot about settling in and he’s very happy to be here. In a lot of games, he has shown his strengths and what he can bring to the team. For Kai, it’s very important to score but you can see in his game more than just goals – key passes and the movement he makes for other players. He is very talented and he will get better and better every game.’

Werner also spoke about the hectic schedule at Chelsea.

‘Of course, some days I’m tired because of the amount of games I’ve played but I did it last year as well and these days it’s normal to play so many games,’ he continued.

‘Every player needs a rest sometimes but it’s good to play every game so it’s no problem for me. Every team that plays in Europe has a game every three days so it’s not only us. It’s difficult but we have a big squad with so many good players.’
