Top Five Players Chelsea Could Sign 2020
Top five players Chelsea could sign in 2020? Who are the top five Chelsea targets? Who are the Chelsea transfer targets? Chelsea will need to sign a number of players this summer in order to compete with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City next season. So who should be the Chelsea summer transfer targets 2020? Here we look at the top five players Chelsea could sign in 2020.
Chelsea have surpassed expectations in their first season under Frank Lampard in the midst of a transfer ban. Following a year of no signings, the Blues have managed to stay in the Premier League top four and have also recorded a decent tally against top-six opposition. However, it has been made abundantly clear that Lampard will need reinforcements if he is to start challenging for trophies again. So he got the best players this season in Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Kai Havertz, Thiago Silva, Ben Chilwell, etc.
Note: I have selected players that are realistically attainable. Of course, I would put players like Lionel Messi if I wanted to, but I’ve selected players that Chelsea could actually sign (and have been linked to in the past). I’ve also considered positions that need strengthening the most such as left-back. So here are the players Chelsea could sign this summer 2020.
Top 5 Players Chelsea Could Sign In 2020
5. Andre Onana – Players Chelsea Could Sign
Kepa Arrizibalaga has greatly underwhelmed since his record arrival from Atletico Bilbao in 2018. He cost Chelsea a whopping £71.2 million and so far, the Spaniard has disappointed. What Chelsea thought they were getting was a top-tier sweeper-keeper who would secure the backline for years to come. Instead, they got an unstable maverick with a bad attitude. Lampard finally pulled the plug on him and benched him in February.
Even if Kepa stays for one more season, Chelsea will be looking to replace him for the long-term. Andre Onana fits the bill perfectly after impressing with Ajax. The Barcelona academy graduate has certainly built up a reputation for himself in the Eredivisie. His heroics in goal helped the Lancers reach the Champions League semi-finals in 2019. The 24-year-old is reportedly interested in testing his talents in the Premier League and Chelsea are in the best position to offer him regular playing time. For now, the Blues have a stop gap player in Mendy, but Onana will be the long-term solution.
Hakim Ziyech connection:
Chelsea have already secured a deal for Onana’s Ajax teammate, Hakim Ziyech. The Stamford Bridge heads will be banking on Ziyech to bring the shot-stopper with him from Amsterdam.
4. Kalidou Koulibaly – Players Chelsea Could Sign in 2020
Chelsea desperately needed a left-back and there is no way around it. Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri are simply not cutting it at Stamford Bridge and an upgrade is highly necessary. This is where they signed Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell.
Another position they need strengthening in is the centre back place. Thiago Silva is at best a stop gap option and while Christensen and Rudiger and Zouma have all been added to the transfer list, there is now the question, who will replace them at the club.
Koulibaly, who is a strong target for Manchester City, is a favorite as well. He is in his prime, is strong and can play easily at the top level for the next 4-5 years!
The Senegalese does have a hefty release clause at Napoli but given that he has only one year left on his contract, it will be a good move for Chelsea to negotiate the price and get him on board!
3. Jadon Sancho – Players Chelsea Could Sign
This is more of a target for next summer. Chelsea are indeed well stocked in attack but with Callum Hudson-Odoi linked with a move to Bayern, the Blues could look to bring in a replacement and Sancho would in fact be an upgrade on that.
With Bayern still intersted in CHO, they could still go for Hudson-Odoi making it important for the Blues to get the Dortmund man this season!
2. Declan Rice – Players Chelsea Could Sign
West Ham centre back Declan Rice is being pursued by Chelsea to improve their defensive and midfield side. Chelsea is trying to rack up cash – £65m to be precise – for the 21-year old midfielder. Lampard is looking to sell Jorginho in order to be able to buy former Chelsea academy player Declan Rice – and for the Chelsea manager, this seems like a good deal. Lampard has been eyeing the West Ham midfielder for a while and feels like he has good potential to rise at Chelsea, just like his best friend Mason Mount did.
1. Dayot Upamecano
Dayot Upamecano has been brilliant for RB Leipzig last season. The defender recently signed a long contract but it has not put the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United from wanting to sign him.
They have scouted him for a long time. He has excellent skills on the ball. However, he will cost a lot and Chelsea might have to break bank to get him.
