Top Five Players Chelsea Could Sign This Summer 2020
Top five players Chelsea could sign this summer in 2020? Who are the top five Chelsea summer targets? Who are the Chelsea summer transfer targets? Chelsea will need to sign a number of players this summer in order to compete with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City next season. So who should be the Chelsea summer transfer targets 2019? Here we look at the top five players Chelsea could sign this summer 2020.
Chelsea have surpassed expectations in their first season under Frank Lampard in the midst of a transfer ban. Following a year of no signings, the Blues have managed to stay in the Premier League top four and have also recorded a decent tally against top-six opposition. However, it has been made abundantly clear that Lampard will need reinforcements if he is to start challenging for trophies again.
Note: I have selected players that are realistically attainable. Of course, I would put players like Lionel Messi if I wanted to, but I’ve selected players that Chelsea could actually sign (and have been linked to in the past). I’ve also considered positions that need strengthening the most such as left-back. So here are the players Chelsea could sign this summer 2020.
Top 5 Players Chelsea Could Sign In The Summer Of 2020
5. Andre Onana
Kepa Arrizibalaga has greatly underwhelmed since his record arrival from Atletico Bilbao in 2018. He cost Chelsea a whopping £71.2 million and so far, the Spaniard has disappointed. What Chelsea thought they were getting was a top-tier sweeper-keeper who would secure the backline for years to come. Instead, they got an unstable maverick with a bad attitude. Lampard finally pulled the plug on him and benched him in February.
Even if Kepa stays for one more season, Chelsea will be looking to replace him for the long-term. Andre Onana fits the bill perfectly after impressing with Ajax. The Barcelona academy graduate has certainly built up a reputation for himself in the Eredivisie. His heroics in goal helped the Lancers reach the Champions League semi-finals in 2019. The 24-year-old is reportedly interested in testing his talents in the Premier League and Chelsea are in the best position to offer him regular playing time.
Hakim Ziyech connection:
Chelsea have already secured a deal for Onana’s Ajax teammate, Hakim Ziyech. The Stamford Bridge heads will be banking on Ziyech to bring the shot-stopper with him from Amsterdam.
4. Alex Telles – Players Chelsea Could Sign This Summer 2020
Chelsea desperately need a left-back and there is no way around it. Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri are simply not cutting it at Stamford Bridge and an upgrade is highly necessary. This is where Alex Telles comes in, a cheaper alternative for Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell.
While Ben has been on Chelsea’s radar for quite some time, an English talent of his pedigree could cost anywhere close to £75 million. Telles, on the other hand, is available for less than half that fee and is also much more experienced. He has been at FC Porto for 4 seasons now after spending one year on loan with Inter Milab. He has also represented Brazil once and is at the prime of his career. Blessed with terrific pace, Telles is terrific in running up and down the left, supplying balls into the opposition box. He is the kind of player that Lampard needs to fully unlock his offensive unit down the left flank. Callum Hudson-Odoi and Christian Pulisic can also benefit from an overlapping fullback like Telles.
3. Philippe Coutinho
Coutinho is hot in the transfer market right now after flopping out with Barca. Bayern Munich don’t want to keep him beyond the 2019/20 season and the La Liga giants want to get rid of him. They are even willing to take a massive loss on him in order to fund other transfers. Frank Lampard has naturally noticed Coutinho’s potential and how he could fit into this Chelsea side. The Brazilian could easily slide in behind Tammy Abraham, ahead of N’Golo Kante and Jorginho. His creativity and ability to control possession will finally allow the front line to start firing on all cylinders.
2. Jadon Sancho
With both Pedro and Willian destined to leave Chelsea this summer, Lampard will need reinforcements in the wing department. The former Manchester City squad player never made the cut to the first team. It saw him leave for Borussia Dortmund. At Dortmund, he has been given the license to thrill and he has seized the opportunity. Sancho runs left, right, centre at defenders. The young winger terrifies defences for England and Dortmund and he is not even 20 yet. Sancho has already become Dortmund’s main man and could soon leave for a bigger club.
He certainly has expressed his desire to return home and play for the big boys. Chelsea have all his friends in Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham and more. The teenager might just love to partner up with his England teammates back in his home country.
1. Moussa Dembele
Chelsea are in the hunt for a striker. Amongst many strikers who the Blues are reportedly interested, Lyon’s Moussa Dembele is probably number one on the list. The Blues only have Tammy Abraham as their in form recognized striker. His back up Michy Batshuayi is not up to the mark and Oliveri Giroud’s contract is running down to an end.
This forced Chelsea’s hand into the transfer market as they launched their first bid for Moussa Dembele and got rejected in January. Lyon will be forced to reconsider their intentions if Chelsea come up with a better offer this summer.
