Enzo Fernandez ruled out for season as Chelsea’s injury woes continue

Chelsea’s midfield maestro, Enzo Fernandez, faces a premature end to his season as he undergoes surgery to address a persistent groin issue.

The Argentine playmaker, who has been a pivotal figure in Chelsea’s midfield, has been battling with a hernia for weeks, hampering his performance on the pitch.

Fernandez’s struggles were evident during Chelsea’s recent 5-0 drubbing at the hands of Premier League leaders Arsenal.

This setback compounds the woes for Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino, who has grappled with an injury crisis throughout the season.

Pochettino has often found himself with a depleted squad, with as many as 12 key players sidelined at times. Despite significant investment, including the landmark signing of Fernandez for £106 million in 2023, Chelsea has struggled to find consistency on the field.

The recent defeat to Arsenal, coupled with a disappointing FA Cup semi-final loss to Manchester City, has intensified pressure on Pochettino.

Speculation looms over his future, with reports suggesting that securing European qualification could be pivotal for his tenure at the club.

To secure European football next season, Chelsea must secure at least a top-seven finish in the Premier League, with sixth place potentially required depending on other outcomes.

Fernandez’s absence for the remaining six games of the season leaves Pochettino with a significant void to fill in midfield. The task of partnering £115 million signing Moises Caicedo now falls to another player as Chelsea seeks to salvage their season amidst mounting challenges.
