Fabrizio Romano provides exclusive update on Chelsea’s plans for David Fofana

Transfer experts Fabrizio Romano has exclusively revealed to GIVEMESPORT that Chelsea forward David Datro Fofana, who is currently on loan with Union Berlin in the Bundesliga, is expected to be recalled and loaned to La Liga club Sevilla.

Fofana, who joined Chelsea for £8 million from Norwegian club Molde in January 2023, was unable to find regular playing time amid the influx of new recruits under owner Todd Boehly.

The 21-year-old Ivorian striker was sent on loan to Union Berlin in the summer, but he failed to make an impact in the Bundesliga.

Romano’s update comes after Fofana’s loan spell in Germany was hindered by an incident in which he refused to shake hands with then-manager Urs Fischer in October.

“Yes, for Fofana, I expect Chelsea to recall him from Union Berlin on loan and then loan him to Sevilla. Let’s see if there’s going to be a loan deal, if it’s going to be with some clauses.

They’re still discussing with Sevilla, but I see Fofana leaving Union Berlin, returning to Chelsea and then leaving the club again, with Sevilla big favourites to sign him.”

Despite apologizing for the event, Fofana’s position at Union Berlin remained unchanged under new manager Nenad Bjelica.

According to MailOnline, Chelsea is considering recalling Fofana and loaning him to Sevilla for the rest of the season. Sevilla, who is currently suffering in La Liga, could provide the perfect platform for Fofana to restart his career.

Romano declared that negotiations between Chelsea and Sevilla are ongoing, but he expects the trade to be completed before the end of the January transfer season.

Given Chelsea’s huge investment under Boehly’s ownership, the potential loan is consistent with the club’s desire to comply with Premier League profit and sustainability rules.

As Chelsea navigates the season’s challenges, a move in approach to the loan market could provide a solution to strengthen their team.
