Chelsea are not fully confident in their ability to sign Moussa Dembele upon which they might consider RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner.
Frank Lampard has been eager to bring in a replacement for both Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi since the winter transfer window.
Their bid for Dembele was rejected by Olympique Lyon and Timo Werner was in the middle of a sensational Bundesliga season with Leipzig. Liverpool are still the favourites for the latter but Chelsea will shift their attention towards him, according to ESPN. Werner’s reported wishes are to leave Germany if he is to be sold by Leipzig.
The German international would also be significantly cheaper at £49 million due to his release clause. Dembele was quoted to be worth £80 million in January. It is unlikely that the Blues will spend that much on a backup forward.
Chelsea’s optimism in signing Werner comes from the fact that no official bids have been received by Leipzig. Liverpool and Manchester United are still weighing out their options in what will be a cash-strapped transfer window. Werner’s talents make him an attractive prospect for several clubs.
He has scored 31 goals in 39 appearances this season along with 12 assists. Chelsea will be performing the greatest coup if they manage to sign him this summer.
