Gallagher’s loan spell at Crystal Palace proves pivotal in career development

Petr Cech, the former Chelsea goalkeeper turned technical and performance advisor, revealed that Conor Gallagher never wanted to leave Stamford Bridge, despite being loaned out to Crystal Palace in 2021.

Speaking exclusively to Sky Sports, Cech disclosed that Gallagher was disheartened by the decision to send him on loan once again, marking his fourth temporary spell away from Chelsea.

“I had the conversation with him when he had to go on loan to Palace because he was upset,” Cech revealed.

“He did so well in the pre-season. We almost wanted to keep him in the team.”

The Chelsea icon also went on to add: “I spoke to Patrick Vieira at the time and he said, ‘I love the player; he will be my engine. If he plays well, he’ll play most of the time.’ “

However, Cech’s intervention proved crucial as he personally spoke to Gallagher regarding the move before it materialized. Despite initial reservations, the loan proved to be a turning point in Gallagher’s career.

Under the tutelage of Patrick Vieira at Crystal Palace, Gallagher flourished, making 39 appearances and netting eight goals across all competitions.

The midfielder’s stellar performances caught the eye of Chelsea’s hierarchy, with reports indicating that the club now values him at a staggering £50 million.

Gallagher’s recent form has only reinforced his worth, with standout displays including a brace against his loan club, Crystal Palace, in a recent fixture.

Gallagher’s development into a potent goalscoring midfielder has undoubtedly validated Cech’s decision to facilitate the loan move, despite the initial reluctance from the player himself.

As Gallagher continues to shine, Chelsea finds themselves in a favorable position, with a prized asset waiting in the wings for a potential return to Stamford Bridge.
