Gareth Southgate backs Raheem Sterling to recover from his nightmare season

Paul Merson dismisses Raheem Sterling’s Euro 2024 hopes

Football pundit Paul Merson provided a harsh opinion on Raheem Sterling’s possibilities of making England’s Euro 2024 team. Considering Sterling’s firm season statistics, Merson thinks the winger’s unstable performances endanger his international chances.

Sterling’s latest awful performance, which included missed penalties and golden opportunities, has left fans disappointed. The 29-year-old’s public apologies and promise of a comeback may fall on deaf ears, as Merson believes it is too late for England.

In his Sky Sports column, Merson wrote:

“Euro 2024 has gone for Raheem Sterling now. He’s having one of those times as a forward where everything goes wrong.

“The more you try, the worse it gets. It’s confidence.

“The pressure is on at Chelsea and the fans are on his back. He could have had a hat-trick the other day and we’d be here now saying how is he not in the squad?

“Instead, we’re thinking how’s he got that many caps? That’s how quickly football changes.

“When Sterling’s hot, he’s unplayable and he turns up in big tournaments. I don’t know if Southgate has made his mind up on him but I don’t see him at the Euros. It’s hard to make a case for him after the weekend.”

Meanwhile, Cole Palmer, another emerging star, is projected to make the squad. The 21-year-old Chelsea player has been a revelation this season, scoring 16 goals and providing 12 assists. Palmer’s outstanding performances have caught the interest of selectors, defining him as a serious contender for the Euros.

While Sterling faces uncertainty, Palmer’s rapid rise suggests a potential change of guard within the national team. As the tournament approaches, England’s team selection threatens to be the subject of intense scrutiny and controversy.
