Thibaut Courtois’ injury earlier this week caused significant disruption in the goalkeeping market
Operations that appeared to be proceeding smoothly or to be nearly complete were halted while Real Madrid considered whether to change its custodian.
The Chelsea custodian Kepa Arrizabalaga was one of them; at the time, he had almost completely finalised his loan agreement with Bayern Munich. The 28-year-old is reportedly choosing to move to Real Madrid as of today, according to Marca.
On Thursday afternoon, Madrid made contact with Kepa, and the former Athletic custodian was hesitant and ultimately decided against moving to Bayern because of Los Blancos’ request.
His departure from Chelsea is partially due to the arrival of Robert Sánchez and the club’s wish to offer game time to the new signing from Brighton. The potential deal with Real Madrid is a loan.
Prior to Courtois’ injury, Thomas Tuchel had called Kepa to attempt to persuade him to sign with Bayern, but Kepa was unable to resist returning to his own country because of the injury.
