Ian Maatsen rejects late bid as he wants to play for his position at Chelsea

Imagine that 21-year-old versatile defender Ian Maatsen, a former Turf Moor player, helped Vincent Kompany’s Burnley team be promoted to the Premier League

In a few years, the young Dutchman will receive his first call-up to the Netherlands senior international team. Maatsen, a brilliant talent shaped by the Chelsea academy, is unquestionably a future star. Burnley presented a loan bid with an obligation to buy for approximately €36.7 million (£32.5 million) in an apparent effort to advance the plot. Chelsea had accepted the offer on their end. But when hopes and wishes are involved, nothing is ever straightforward, is it? Maatsen was reportedly hesitant to sign a permanent contract with Burnley, according to numerous sources. What led to this hesitation, it begs the question?

According to rumours, the Dutch star was actually more receptive to moving to West Ham United. But because Aaron Cresswell has decided to remain at the London club, David Moyes and company have retreated. Despite their good relationship from their loan season last year, it appears that Maatsen had expressed his concerns to Kompany about committing to Burnley on a full-time basis.

The complexities of football finance also shouldn’t be disregarded. Chelsea has spent more than €1 billion under Todd Boehly’s ownership since last summer, so selling academy product Maatsen would be pure profit. It would be advantageous for Chelsea financially. However, as Matt Law of the Telegraph reported, the agreement is “dead in the water” and Maatsen will remain at Stamford Bridge.

The strategies employed by Mauricio Pochettino add still another level of complication. Maatsen, who is often a left-back, has been playing in Chelsea’s front four ever since the Argentine took over. Although he hasn’t started a Premier League game yet this year, he has entered as a substitute for cameos in each game. In light of the failure of Marc Cucurella’s loan deal with Manchester United, Maatsen’s position in the team appears to indicate attacking contributions.

The young man is in an interesting period of his profession. Although he was a key component in Burnley’s promotion last season, he is reluctant to go back. Maatsen appears to be lured to other futures, whether it is the attraction of Chelsea or the chance to wear claret and blue at West Ham. Thus, despite a deal being reached, Ian Maatsen is still a Chelsea supporter for the time being.
