Fabrizio Romano shuts down Chelsea’s pursuit of Benfica’s Antonio Silva

Fabrizio Romano, a renowned Italian journalist, strongly denied that Chelsea will make a move for Benfica’s top defender Antonio Silva in January.

Romano, a reliable source in the football transfer market, showed in his most recent Substack newsletter that the circulating rumors tying Silva to the Premier League giants are false.

Despite initial reports from The Sun suggesting Chelsea’s interest and the necessity of activating Silva’s large £87 million release clause, Romano rejected the prospect, characterizing it as “a deal that probably won’t be happening.”

The seasoned journalist, who is well-known for his precise transfer updates, confirmed that he has received no information backing Silva’s chances of joining Chelsea.

Chelsea, a financially strong club, may have the resources to satisfy Silva’s release clause, but Romano questioned the necessity of such a transfer at this time. Chelsea’s current team appears to be well-equipped, especially with Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile out due to injuries.

While the Blues have been connected with other defensive talents, Romano reiterated that Chelsea would be unlikely to pursue Silva this month due to the hefty price tag.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino’s focus will most likely be on maximizing the existing defensive alternatives and reassessing the position during the upcoming summer transfer window.

In the unpredictable world of football transfers, Romano’s definitive stance adds a layer of certainty to Chelsea’s transfer plans, at least regarding Antonio Silva.
