Rio Ferdinand responds to criticisms of Thiago Silva after poor show against Newcastle

Fluminense President confident Thiago Silva will become free agent

Fluminense club president Mario Bittencourt expressed growing confidence that Thiago Silva, Chelsea’s seasoned defender, will become a free agent this summer. Bittencourt told Globo Esporte that the club plans to pursue the center-back if he chooses not to extend his contract with the Blues.

This comment echoes recent statements from Fluminense director Fred Guedes, who stated that the club has been closely monitoring Silva’s condition at Chelsea, nourishing hopes of a possible signing.

“I’m very good friends with Thiago, I talk to him about a lot of things and not just about coming to Fluminense. We don’t have anything at the moment, but we’re very keen for him to come home,” said Mario Bittencourt.

“From what we’ve heard, his contract with Chelsea runs out in the middle of the year and he won’t renew it. I think that, in Brazil, he wants to play for Fluminense. As soon as he’s cleared at Chelsea, we’ll get back to him. And he’ll help us in this important year.”

Silva, a passionate Fluminense fan, has constantly professed his wish to finish his long career with his favorite club. With the Brazilian legend set to turn 40 in September, the timing seemed ideal for a homecoming.

Silva has made 146 appearances for Chelsea since joining the club on a free transfer from Paris Saint Germain in 2020. After having the option of leaving Chelsea last year, the experienced defender chose to stay for another season.

However, Silva’s future in London remains uncertain, as Chelsea considers whether to keep him for another season. As the summer transfer window approaches, all eyes are focused on Silva’s future move, with Fluminense hoping for a reunion with their wandering son.
