Borussia Dortmund reportedly interested in Ian Maatsen

Ian Maatsen has struggled for game time under Mauricio Pochettino.

The 21-year-old full-back has struggled for minutes this campaign and played only 106 minutes in the Premier League.

He is yet to start a league game this term and has only been handed a measly seven times off the bench.

Chelsea have activated a one-year contract extension on the defender’s contract which is now to expire in 2025.

Ian Maatsen is keen to seek a new challenge elsewhere and will push for a move in the January transfer window.

But new FIFA regulations on overseas loan deals explain that Maatsen would need to leave the club permanently.

Clubs will be allowed to let only seven players out on loan at one time and Chelsea have already filled that quota.

Borussia Dortmund are interested in signing the defender but wouldn’t have the cash to sign Maatsen on a permanent deal due to the club’s financial position.

Earlier in October, Maatsen expressed his desire to leave Chelsea if he’s not guaranteed minutes at the club.

He said: “Accepting [you won’t play] is difficult, as a young boy you always want more. I get confidence from the manager’s words and am ready when the opportunity comes.

“Meanwhile, I have to keep all options open. Maybe I’ll have to make a difficult decision later on, but then Chelsea will also let me know.”
