What Can Chelsea Expect Of Reece James Going Forward?

Chelsea’s biggest concern this summer will be the striker and fullback positions.

Frank Lampard has assembled a decent squad with the use of youth talent but he does need to make a few adjustments to compete for the Premier League title once again.

Most of Chelsea’s problems have originated at the left-back spot but Cesar Azpilicueta isn’t getting any younger at right-back. He is due to turn 31 this year and his limitations are starting to show. While an outstanding defensive unit and a leader on the pitch, the Spaniard simply does not do enough going forward.

He is technically not adept as is most modern-day full-backs. Azpilicueta’s biggest strength might be his versatility which is why he has covered almost all positions in defence throughout his Chelsea career. Frank Lampard recognized his value but might not shy away from dropping him for the more suited Recce James.

Packed with pace and technical skill, James has emerged as the needful creative star down the right flank. His distribution from the flank and ability to charge forward has given Chelsea a different outlet in attack. Sure, the Englishman still needs to learn his defensive responsibilities but at 20, you can only see his glaring strengths.

Lampard is a manager who prefers to play attacking football with a high-intensity pressing tactic while defending. James fills all the needful boxes and could become a mainstay at right-back from next season itself. It will be a challenge to fill the shoes of Azpilicueta but something tells me, the youngster is up for the challenge.
