The youthful striker made several appearances during the preseason and scored once during a friendly match.
This week, when he faced Wimbledon, he made his first start in a competitive game, but it appears it will be his last for a while as he moves to the North East. The 20-year-old’s opportunities would be limited moving forward if Armando Broja made his recovery from injury in the following two weeks.
Burstow, who was also a target for Blackburn Rovers in the final days of the summer transfer window, transferred from Charlton Athletic to Chelsea in January of last year. Burstow, who spent last season with Chelsea’s development squad and registered 10 goals in 25 league appearances, participated in preseason training with the first team this summer under Mauricio Pochettino.
As he advanced through the tiers from non-League football, Burstow demonstrated his exceptional talent, and we are incredibly eager to see what he can accomplish in the Championship.
Burstow arrives too late to play in the Black Cats’ match against Southampton tomorrow, but considering how busy the Championship’s schedule is, we can certainly assume that manager Tony Mowbray will take him under his wing and give him the starts he needs to really grow this year.
