Crystal Palalce have announced the signing of Chelsea defender Gary Cahill on a free transfer.

Cahill had been released by Chelsea earlier this year at the end of last season. The former Bolton defender joined Chelsea back in 2011-12 season after impressing with the side from Reebok stadium.

In his very first season at Chelsea, despite joining in January, he played a crucial role in helping the club win the FA Cup and their first UEFA Champions League trophy by starting in the final against Bayern in Munich.

He went on to win several other trophies for the club, including Premier Leagues, Carling Cups, Europa Leagues and plenty of other trophies. He captained the club for the last two seasons after the departure of John Terry.

However, he himself was being shunned out of playing time by both managers Antonio Conte and specially Maurizio Sarri, who refused to play him at any cost. Cahill cut a frustrated figure at the club and the chance of extending his contract for the 33 year old was never on the plate.

He has now joined Palace, where he can be expected to get regular game time.
