Marc Cucurella confirms Manchester City did try to sign him from Chelsea this summer

Marc Cucurella was previously sought after by Manchester City, but the Blues preferred to keep him at the club

From the beginning of his stay at Brighton, Cucurella’s professional life was going well. He did have a successful season in 2021/22, the first year following his transfer from Getafe, as the Seagulls finished ninth in the Premier League thanks in part to a goal and an assist from him. Beyond these numbers, the left-back’s impact was also evident because he received votes for both player of the season and players’ player of the season.

Cucurella’s strong performances at Brighton won him a move to a major team, as is frequently the case with breakout players, and he moved for Chelsea in a £62 million deal. The left-back’s time at Stamford Bridge hasn’t exactly gone smoothly. Ben Chilwell, who is the obvious favourite on the left side of defence when healthy, played 24 league games in place of Cucurella last season.

Cucurella has only participated in one game thus far this season, a League Cup contest against Wimbledon. One obstacle to his probable transfer to Manchester United was that. The fact that Cucurella had played for the Blues in the cup meant that the Spaniard wouldn’t have been available for some of the games in which he would have been needed. Nevertheless, United sought Cucurella because they needed coverage for the injured Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw.

According to reports, the Red Devils were “unhappy” that Chelsea had used him and chose to sign Sergio Reguilon on loan as a substitute. Chelsea had the chance to transfer Cucurella to a significant team that had previously viewed him as a surprising asset. In spite of his poor performance since joining the club, transfer insider Romano has stated Man City wanted to take him off the hands of the Blues.

Cucurella had just recently signed for a substantial amount, so it made natural that Chelsea would want to hold onto him in the hopes that he would eventually find his footing. Furthermore, Chilwell had just recently returned after a protracted absence, and another injury would have made the former Brighton player necessary. Cucurella has been underwhelming this season, and had City entered the picture now, the Blues might have thought about getting rid of him.
