Lampard explains Giroud absence

Chelsea were always going to be short of an experienced striker this season.

The Blues lost their record signing Alvaro Morata although he was not much to talk about. Sarri’s loan signing Higuain also failed. However, Chelsea were stopped from buying a new striker in the summer due to a transfer ban.

This meant that Giroud was going to play a crucial role in the Chelsea squad. Indeed, he did start the Super Cup final versus Liverpool.  However, the rise of Tammy Abraham meant that there was suddenly a new solution.

This did not although mean that in small matches against the likes of Grimsby, Tammy would keep playing. Giroud was expected to fill in. However, that was not the case as it was Michy who walked in instead. With fans now wondering what happened to Giroud, Lampard has explained his mysterious absence from the squad.

“He has been ill,” Lampard said of Giroud. “It took him out of Liverpool and [he is] still recovering. Michy has trained well and made an impact. It’s great for me. He can hold the ball up and he is important for us.”

Will we soon get to see Giroud back in action for the Blues?
