Billy Gilmour made an impressive debut for Chelsea as the Blues thrashed fourth tier side Grimsby Town.

Gilmour played in the deep lying midfield position and idols a former Premier League great and Chelsea champion Cesc Fabregas.

‘My game is about getting on the ball and starting play and that is why I started tonight,’ Gilmour told Standard Sport after the final whistle. ‘I have been training well and doing well in games and the gaffer has told me just to play how I play and he believes in me.

‘Ross [Barkley] was really good with me, communicating with me and saying, “Look, you don’t need to run all the time, sometimes just stay.” ‘I did that and that is how I got most of the ball. ‘Obviously it is good for them to tell me so I can improve, they have been really good with me.’

The Chelsea boss was also full of praise for the young Scot.

‘I thought Billy Gilmour was the best player on the pitch,’ said the Chelsea manager ‘He moves the ball at a pace. Every pass he hits is punchy and into people’s feet. I’m delighted for him.’
