Ian Maatsen has impressed the manager in the last three pre-season games.
The youngster has been deployed as a left-back twice, then once on the right wing and has been brilliant in both positions.
He was also on the scoresheet in Chelsea’s 5-0 win over Wrexham as he registered a brace.
Maatsen was impressive again in the two games since, against Newcastle and Brighton operating in a more advanced role.
The 21-year-old has truly excelled in the pre-season bagging two goals and an assist to his name in the last three games.
Maatsen said: “It’s been good. Nice weather. Good tour. A new coach. A lot of hard work. There are a lot of new players in the squad too, but it is a good group. We are all still getting used to each other but are enjoying it.
“It has been different, but I quite like it,’ he says. ‘I still find myself in positions on the pitch I know [from playing full-back] and it is good to be adaptable to help the team.
“The goals against Wrexham were a great start and gave me a little more confidence.”
