John Obi Mikel gives an honest assessment of Marc Cucurella.

The former Brighton defender who arrived at Stamford Bridge last summer had a disastrous 2022/23 campaign with the Blues.

But he has improved significantly in the ongoing season even though there are still many critiques of his performances.

Cucurella twisted his ankle in the last game and is expected to be out for the next few games.

The Spaniard has not become a Chelsea fan-favourite yet, although he is a decent and versatile fullback for depth.

He has done a decent job for Mauricio Pochettino, playing at left-back and right-back.

Many believe Cucurella has a lot to offer as a squad player, but he doesn’t deserve to start every week.

Club legend John Obi Mikel believes the Spaniard doesn’t have the attributes to become a Chelsea player.

He said: “He is not Chelsea standard. I wouldn’t say that.

“When you look at the left-backs we have had, Ashley Cole, Cesar Azpilicueta, William Gallas, you are talking about these players who have stayed at the club for many years, played so many games, and the standard they have set for that position… for me, he’s not at Chelsea standard.”
