Chelsea might push for one last time to sign Enzo Fernandez

Enzo Fernandez, a midfielder for Benfica, may be available for transfer in January, and Chelsea may attempt to sign him “one more time.”

Following his outstanding performances for Benfica in 2022–2023, the 21-year-old has been on the Blues’ radar for some time. However, the potential transfer has delayed recently because of opposition from his current employers.

According to recent reports in The Mirror, Roger Schmidt, the manager of Benfica, has steadfastly rejected that Fernandez might move from the Estadio da Luz to Stamford Bridge, saying that any potential transfer was “closed” as a result of issues that arose during discussions.

With their present group of midfielders, Chelsea already faces some uncertainty because mainstays Jorginho and N’Golo Kante have not signed a contract extension and are free agents in the summer. Since moving to Lisbon from River Plate last year, Fernandez has put up some impressive performances for Benfica in 2022–23, giving his team an offensive danger. According to Transfermarkt, Fernandez has racked up three goals and five assists across all competitions.

His prowess with the ball is outstanding, as seen by WhoScored’s report of a season-long pass success rate of 89.2%. Of course, his World Cup performances have played a big part in his rise to fame, as he contributed to Argentina’s World Cup victory with a wonder goal against Mexico and an assist against Poland in the group stage. His World Cup performances have also contributed to a string of reliable performances.

The Daily Mail suggested earlier this month that it may cost Chelsea as much as £112 million to get Fernandez to the Premier League, so any effort to lure him to Stamford Bridge wouldn’t be cheap.
