Chelsea may be unable to afford Declan Rice this summer

The Blues might not be able to lure away Declan Rice from West Ham this summer.

Chelsea have already spent over £200million on signing players like Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech and Ben Chilwell whereas Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr arrived as free agents.

Werner and Havertz have just settled themselves as first-group regulars with the other new signings are working up to full wellness.

The Blues’ seventh summer signing, goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, is set to be confirmed in the next few days.

Chelsea have been keeping an eye on Declan Rice for a while now but the £80million price tag could be costly for the Blues given their huge summer spending.

Frank Lampard needs to let go a number of players at Stamford Bridge to help balance the books within the next two weeks.

“I have an idea of what I want,” Lampard said.

“I want to make the squad have healthy competition but not to have so many players not competing regularly, feeling like they are out of the squad and not getting the minutes they want.

“These are conversations I will have going forward.

“It does not mean we are forced in any positions to move players on but conversations will be ongoing in the next couple of weeks.

“My priority will always be making sure I maintain and keep the strongest squad I can at this club.

“After that the individual questions and conversation will happen within that and I will try to make sure I go into the season once the window is shut with the squad that I feel is competitive in a healthy way.”
