Chelsea legend Frank Lampard is reportedly now the favourite to take over as Everton manager following the recent sacking of Rafael Benitez.

Lampard has been out of employment since being dismissed by Chelsea a year ago, however he has recently been linked with opportunities at Rangers and Norwich City.

With the vacancy at Goodison Park, it appears like the former England player may return to Premier League management.

The next Premier League job opening is at Everton, where Rafael Benitez, another former Chelsea manager, was sacked earlier this month amid high tensions on Merseyside.

The Toffees had pursued Lampard and conducted preliminary conversations, but it appeared that Vitor Pereira was the frontrunner to succeed Benitez, but the decision was received with such a backlash from supporters that Lampard now appears to be in pole position for the job.

Lampard is due to meet with Everton bosses, who appear to have backed down on potentially employing Pereira, who clearly did not appeal to the Merseyside giants’ supporters.

There might yet be more possibilities in the running, with former World Cup-winning Italy center-back Fabio Cannavaro regarded as an underdog for the position.

Lampard would be an intriguing appointment having putting in some good performances at Chelsea and Derby County in the past.
