Lesley Ugochukwu, a 19-year-old midfielder for Rennes, has agreed to join Chelsea

The Blues are looking to bolster their midfield this summer and have concentrated their attention on Moises Caicedo of Brighton. However, they recently had an offer of £80 million for the Ecuadorian international turned down.

Caicedo is at the top of a long list of possible midfielders that also includes players who match Chelsea’s concept of acquiring young players with tremendous potential for the future. According to sources, Blues authorities have made an effort to sign one of those rising stars by signing a contract with Ugochukwu. With Rennes, a sum of about £25 million has been agreed upon, and the adolescent is now permitted to receive medical attention.

Ugochukwu’s immediate future is still out in the air, and Chelsea is willing to loan the 19-year-old to a new sister team in Strasbourg so he can gain more senior experience. Arsen Zakharyan, a midfielder for Dynamo Moscow, is another player Chelsea hopes to sign in Strasbourg.

If a deal can be struck, Montpellier striker Elye Wahi may potentially be loaned to the French team. Ugochukwu, a tall young player who made his Les Rouge et Noirs debut in April 2021, has spent the majority of his senior career playing at the base of Rennes’ midfield.

When Rennes travelled to Stamford Bridge to play Chelsea in the Champions League group stage of the 2020–21 season, Ugochukwu was on the bench for Rennes before to that debut. In a recent interview with The Athletic, Ugochukwu remembered, “I went to Chelsea and I saw Stamford Bridge. You think, “Wow!” when you move from watching it on TV as a child to actually being there. Chelsea hasn’t given up on Caicedo yet, and they’re likely to come back with a higher offer for the 21-year-old in the future.
