Chelsea confirms the departure of Tiemoue Bakayoko after a terrible spell at Stamford Bridge

In order to make it clear which players will be released and which will remain with the team this summer, Chelsea has recently issued their retained and released list

As usual, the majority of the departing players are young players who have completed their contracts with the club and are now free to pursue careers elsewhere. But Tiemoue Bakayoko is one name that stands out.

One of the strangest Chelsea careers we can recall was his. The midfielder had the ideal profile to fit in with a midfield that included N’Golo Kante and Cesc Fabregas when he was signed by the club on a high following an outstanding title-winning season. In his first six months at the club, he also had a few standout performances, but everything went horribly wrong after that, and we’ve rarely seen a downward spiral as severe as his.

After playing poorly during the winter and helping Chelsea defeat a formidable Atletico Madrid team, he was ultimately loaned out at the end of the season.

Since then, he has just not recovered at all. His loan stints have become increasingly less fruitful, and he hasn’t even appeared in a game in the past 18 months. He has come to represent a bad loan and transfer strategy that allows players signed for £40 million to depart for free after a few years.

It’s not surprising that he was freed; the real mystery is what on earth will happen next. Whatever happens, we hope the best for him.
