Chelsea Chances Of Signing Philippe Coutinho In Player-Plus-Cash Deal

Chelsea’s hopes of signing Philippe Coutinho are not over just yet.

Reports have strongly linked the Blues with Kai Havertz but signing the Bayer Leverkusen ace promises to be a pricey affair.

Coutinho’s future at Barcelona might just be over. After just 18 months into his £142m switch from Liverpool, the Brazilian was loaned out to Bayern Munich. He could have stayed in Germany abut the Bavarians opted out against activating his £83m buy-back clause.

That means Coutinho is in sort of a transfer limbo with another loan deal looking likely. Barca are aware that raising the entire £142m for him will be a challenge, especially in the current financial climate. They could accept a fee of around £55m if a player is added to the deal.

Frank Lampard is keen on a player like Coutinho because he knows exactly what he will bring. The 28-year-old is Premier League tested and one of the elite playmakers when given the chance to shine. He could unlock Chelsea’s attack with his nimble footwork, creativity and vision.

The Blues will also have a chance to offload one of their players that are excess to their needs. Barcelona are looking for reinforcements in defence. That could mean Marcos Alonso, Emerson Palmieri or even Kurt Zouma sent the other way. Emerson seems likely to make a switch to Juventus and the other two’s futures are up in smokes.
