Chelsea, the Blues of English football, are apparently considering a daring move for veteran Manchester United defender Harry Maguire

Despite having a difficult season at Old Trafford, which culminated in him losing the captaincy, Maguire can find himself at the middle of Stamford Bridge’s developing plans.

Maguire was appointed team captain in January 2020, six months into his great career with Manchester United. His era was unexpectedly put to an end when new manager Erik ten Hag decided to use him differently, resulting in a curtailed season with only eight Premier League appearances. According to press sources, Maguire was “shocked, angry, and upset” after being fired, which led to a renewed determination to establish himself outside of the club where he no longer enjoyed a privileged position.

Chelsea needed to strengthen their defensive lineup after important players Cesar Azpilicueta and Kalidou Koulibaly were lost to trades, while Thiago Silva is rapidly approaching his 39th year. As a result, the Blues have allegedly joined West Ham and Tottenham in the race for Maguire’s services.

Even yet, Chelsea’s strong pursuit of Maguire may prove to be difficult. Similar to his current scenario at Old Trafford, the former Leicester City defender might not be Chelsea’s first option in the starting lineup. He cordially acknowledged the supporters and offered respect to former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for the duty he had once been entrusted with before promising his unshakable support to whoever assumes the captain’s armband next.

Despite these events, Maguire’s future is still in doubt. While his deal with Manchester United is scheduled to expire in 2025, a summer transfer is possible. This might be used as leverage to finance a new acquisition, with Rasmus Hojlund of Atalanta being a rumoured target. More information on Maguire’s future and whether Chelsea might become his new football club will become available in the following weeks.
