Elye Wahi of Montpellier is a target for Arsenal and Chelsea

This summer, sources claim that Arsenal and Chelsea would compete for the services of Montpellier center-forward Elye Wahi. Jurrien Timber, Declan Rice, and Kai Havertz have already switched to the Emirates. However, Mikel Arteta is eager to expand his roster.

Wahi had a terrific 2022–2023 season with Montpellier and is expected to develop into a top talent. According to numerous reports, Chelsea and the French team are ‘in negotiations’ about signing Wahi this summer. In 33 Ligue 1 games last season, the 20-year-old scored 19 goals and provided six assists. He now contributes an astounding 0.76 goals on average per game. The striker is reportedly a favourite of Pochettino’s. Wahi, however, won’t be used in the Premier League in the upcoming season; the manager instead intends to loan him to Strasbourg.

Wahi ‘doesn’t like’ this concept, according to the French publication RMC Sport, and would rather join the Blues’ first team right away. Chelsea is putting together a proposal of €32 million (£28 million) for the France Under-21 international. However, Arsenal might be able to derail their intentions. According to the rumour, the Gunners have ‘enquired’ into Wahi and might potentially sabotage Chelsea’s bid. As previously noted, Arteta hopes to expand on his successful 2022–23 season by adding more players this summer.

The Spaniard is keeping an eye on a variety of names. For instance, in addition to Wahi, Arteta is contemplating a move for Sporting Lisbon center-back Ousmane Diomande. Arsenal, though, is currently concentrating on selling players before they buy anyone else due to FFP worries. Sporting director Edu is now attempting to sell six players: Rob Holding, Kieran Tierney, Albert Lokonga, Cedric Soares, Nicolas Pepe, and Kieran Tierney. However, they have a real interest in Wahi, who is believed to be eager to relocate to the Emirates.

However, given that they already have a seasoned Ligue 1 goal scorer in their ranks, the issue that emerges is whether they really need to add Wahi. Folarin Balogun scored 22 goals across all competitions while on loan with Reims last season. Like Wahi, Balogun aspires to play a consistent number of minutes at a good level. Arteta is willing to sell him this summer since he isn’t willing to promise him that. Arsenal’s choice to let him go and then purchase Wahi for £28 million would be dubious. They are apparently prepared to compete with Chelsea for his services, though.
