Chelsea booked their place in the Champions League quarter finals with a 4-1 aggregate win over French champions Lille

The west Londoners came into the game with a two-goal lead following their first-leg match at Stamford Bridge three weeks ago, despite the lingering uncertainty surrounding the club’s ownership.

Lille began strongly as they sought to reduce the aggregate deficit, and while Chelsea appeared to be dealing with their danger, the French side was given a penalty in the 38th minute when Jorginho was ruled to have touched the ball inside the area.

Burak Yilmaz, glided up to the ball before slamming it past Edouard Mendy into the top corner to cut the deficit in half.

Chelsea would reclaim their two-goal aggregate lead in the third minute of first-half stoppage time, with Jorginho atoning for his handball with a brilliantly weighted through pass into the path of Christian Pulisic, who finished beautifully across the goalie and into the bottom corner.

Speaking after the game, Blues boss Thomas Tuchel was delighted with his side’s ‘resilience and mentality’ in the face of all the off-field adversity.

“Brilliant. It’s so nice so many fans are here to support the team, it feels brilliant,” “The quarter-finals is a big step. We showed resilience and mentality to overcome difficulties.
