Thiago Silva has lauded his teammate and club captain Reece James.

The England international has been the subject of criticism after he received a red card against Newcastle United over the weekend.

The 23-year-old Chelsea defender was given his marching orders during their 4-1 defeat at the hands of Eddie Howe’s men at the weekend.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino was disappointed with Reece James who will now serve a suspension in Sunday’s clash against Brighton.

His rise in recent years only suggests that he can become one of the world’s elite defenders and is already in the mix for the world’s top right-back.

James has made a total of 154 appearances for the Blues and led the club to Champions League glory in 2021.

‘I have a really good relationship with Reece James,’ Silva told the Chelsea website.

‘He’s a really good captain and he has a big future because he’s a really good listener.

‘It’s my job to be a bit of a sounding board now. It’s hard because sometimes the players are very different in age to myself.

‘What we want to do is speed up the process of understanding and I think the players we have here are generally good at that.’
