Rio Ferdinand questions why two players are picked ahead of Sterling in England squad

Raheem Sterling was left out of the European Qualifiers squad.

England manager Gareth Southgate has often been criticised for being over loyal to some players but he did not include Sterling in the latest England squad.

He has been overlooked in the last five squads as the former Man City winger struggled to make an impact at Chelsea.

Sterling was England’s best player in Euro 2020 and has always delivered for England on the grandest stage.

The English winger recently found his stride under Mauricio Pochettino but still struggled to make it Southgate’s squad.

Pundit Rio Ferdinand is baffled by Gareth Southgate’s decision to not include Sterling in the latest Three Lions squad.

He said: “Free my guy, free Raheem Sterling. I don’t know what he’s done, whose nose he’s put out of joint. Was it him coming back from the tournament or something like that?

“I don’t know what’s happened but for him not to be in the England squad is beyond me. I know there’s a lot of talent but if we’re talking form then he’s got more assists and goal involvements than Rashford and Grealish together.

“But Kalvin Phillips is playing on the back of a good Euros. Maguire is playing on the back of that.

“So if they’re playing because of that, what’s happened to Sterling? Free him up!”
