Given the current state of affairs, Marseille has been searching for options other than Alexis Sanchez to lead the line next season and have highlighted former Ligue 1 striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as a viable candidate

Initial contact has been made over a potential transfer for the Gabon international, formerly of Saint-Étienne and now at Chelsea, according to L’Équipe tonight, and this was first reported by Spanish publication Relevo.

Although he has a one-year extension on his contract with the Premier League team, it doesn’t seem probable that he will see any action in the upcoming season.

The possibility of moving to Saudi Arabia has also surfaced; the Gulf Kingdom would be able to match or perhaps raise Olympique de Marseille’s Chelsea pay.

The former Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal, and Barcelona player is suitable for the 4-4-2 formation that Marseille’s new Spanish manager Marcelino wants to use.

Ten years after his initial departure from Ligue 1, Pierre Emerick Aubameyang’s arrival would be a statement signing for the new-look Phocéens despite his underwhelming season last year (only three goals scored).
