Ian Maatsen informs Chelsea of desire to join Borussia Dortmund permanently

Ian Maatsen’s intends is quite clear: he wants to make his temporary stay in Germany permanent. The Chelsea left-back, who is currently on loan at Borussia Dortmund, has reportedly informed his parent club that he wants to join the Bundesliga giants on a permanent basis during the summer transfer window.

‘I always believed [I could] play for Chelsea but unfortunately for some reason it didn’t work out how it should’ve,’ Maatsen told CBS Sports this week.

‘Now I’m here I’m very grateful for the opportunity. I can say I’m very proud of myself.

‘I kept believing in myself and came here to experience playing my game at the highest level, playing my game. Today I think I showed a very good performance. I’m very happy.’

Maatsen’s decision follows his breakout performance, in which he scored his first Champions League goal, securing Dortmund’s prized semi-final spot. The Dutchman’s successful stint with the German club has clearly influenced his decision, with sources indicating a release clause of €35-40 million

This revelation marks a significant shift from Maatsen’s initial aspirations of cementing his place in the Chelsea squad. Despite his earlier ambitions, the prospect of regular first-team football at Dortmund seems to have lured him away from Stamford Bridge.

Having excelled during his loan spell at Burnley last season, Maatsen’s stock has soared, prompting interest from various quarters.

Chelsea, who had previously entertained offers for the talented full-back, may now face the prospect of bidding farewell to a promising prospect, should negotiations with Dortmund materialize.
