Thiago Silva faces uncertain future after Chelsea’s defeat to Manchester United
Thiago Silva, Chelsea’s defensive lynchpin, has come under fire following the Blues’ recent loss to Manchester United.
ESPN pundit Steve Nicol has expressed his worries, claiming that the top player may be on the decline.
“Thiago Silva has been magnificent as a player, but now the problem for me is he can’t move his feet quick enough”, Nicol told ESPN FC.
“I think his brain’s still working, but when you can’t move your feet, it takes too long.
“And when you’re playing against players like today and Man United, who just couldn’t wait to close the ball down, couldn’t wait to put you under pressure, then you end up getting caught with the ball and you make rash decisions and you give the ball away.”
Chelsea’s defense failed at Old Trafford, allowing Manchester United an astounding 28 shots, resulting in a 2-1 loss.
Silva, who has been a constant presence for Chelsea this season, played the entire game but failed to display his customary defensive prowess.
The 39-year-old Brazilian, whose contract expires at the end of the season, is facing questions over his future at Stamford Bridge.
Despite Silva’s recent poor performance, Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino is expected to keep faith in the veteran center-back as the Blues prepare to face Everton.
