Chelsea set to recall Diego Moreira amidst disappointing Lyon spell

Diego Moreira’s brief stay with Lyon appears to be nearing to an end, with reports claiming Chelsea would welcome the Portuguese starlet back within the next 24 hours.

Lyon’s decision to end Moreira’s loan term comes after he struggled to make an effect in Ligue 1, appearing only seven times and recording no goals or assists.

Moreira, who joined Chelsea on a free transfer from Benfica during the summer transfer window, is returning after Lyon decided to terminate his loan prematurely. The 21-year-old first drew attention with a cameo in Chelsea’s Carabao Cup win over AFC Wimbledon on August 30.

However, the loan move hasn’t panned out as expected for Moreira, prompting Lyon to make the decision to allow him to return to Stamford Bridge. With rules restricting him from featuring for a third club this season, Moreira’s options upon his return are limited.

He could either drop down to the Under-21s and participate in Premier League 2 football, where he has already made three appearances this season, or train with Mauricio Pochettino’s first-team squad.

Moreira’s imminent return was indicated by his absence from training on Sunday, as reported by Fabrice Hawkins. Chelsea, in a proactive move, has already recalled three players from their loan spells this month, showcasing their commitment to reshaping the squad for the challenges ahead. The official confirmation of Moreira’s return is expected shortly after his arrival in London.
