Chelsea and Montpellier have spoken about a potential summer transfer for 20-year-old forward Elye Wahi

Wahi had a breakthrough season in Ligue 1 last year, scoring 19 goals and contributing another six assists to place seventh in the division’s scoring statistics.

Unsurprisingly, a lot of teams in Europe have taken notice of that performance, and according to 90min, officials of Chelsea’s BlueCo ownership group have spoken with Montpellier about the possibility of signing Wahi.

Whether Wahi is viewed as a target for Chelsea or the newest member of the BlueCo family, fellow Ligue 1 team Strasbourg, who recently hired Patrick Vieira as their new manager, is unknown at this time. Since entering, Vieira is believed to have participated in discussions about Wahi. While Lazio and Union Berlin are well-known fans in continental Europe, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, and Wolves have also been keeping an eye on Wahi in England.

However, Eintracht Frankfurt is thought to be Wahi’s biggest rival, as the Bundesliga club see him as a possible Randal Kolo Muani successor should the in-demand forward move elsewhere. Wahi is interested in transferring to Frankfurt, where fellow Frenchman Kolo Muani has blossomed into a €100m target for several of Europe’s top clubs, according to a source close to the striker.

Laurent Nicollin, the president of Montpellier, admitted to Midi Libre over the weekend that “a German and an English club” are vying for Wahi’s services but eventually chose not to say who they are. Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson were already added to Chelsea’s forward line, but it is believed that they are still looking for a third striker.
