Chelsea’s youthful star, Ian Maatsen finds himself at a professional crossroads. The 21-year-old, who turned down down a permanent move to Burnley in order to stay at Stamford Bridge, is growing frustrated with manager Mauricio Pochettino due to his limited playing time.

Speaking to Algemeen Dagblad, Maatsen explained: ‘The European Championship, that’s what I’m secretly hoping for.

‘I think I have also shown myself well to the national coach during training [back in September].

‘I also know that I have to play more for that. I still think that is possible at Chelsea.

‘As a young player you always want more. I gain confidence from the trainer’s words and I am ready when the opportunity comes.

‘In the meantime, I have to keep all options open. I may have to make difficult choices later, but then the club will indicate that.’

Despite an excellent loan season in the Championship, Maatsen has struggled to gain a starting position in the Premier League, appearing in only seven substitute appearances totaling 107 minutes this season.

His chances of representing the Netherlands in the coming European Championships are jeopardized as he lost his spot in the senior squad, resulting in a call-up to the Under-21s.

Asked about his relationship with Chelsea manager, Maatsen continued: ‘The manager told me, “You have everything a player needs”.

‘We have built up a good relationship, also because he is very open. His door is open for everyone to talk. He also wants to learn from his players.’

Maatsen is optimistic but realistic about his future, recognizing the importance of consistent playing time.

With a ‘difficult choice’ coming, the young left-back may be forced to leave Chelsea in order to seek opportunities for his growth and international ambitions.
