Chelsea winger Raheem Sterling rejects big offer from Saudi Pro League

ESPN Pundit Steve Nicol labels Sterling as ‘the Villain’ for missed opportunities

Following Chelsea’s disappointing 2-2 draw with Burnley, ESPN pundit Steve Nicol picked out Raheem Sterling for criticism, labelling him as ‘the villain’ of the match.

Although holding the lead twice and having a statistical lead after Burnley’s Lorenz Assignon was sent off, Chelsea were failed to secure three points. Cole Palmer’s brace seemed to put them in control, but defensive errors and wasted opportunities plagued them throughout the game.

Nicol did not spare words, highlight Sterling’s squandered opportunities, such as a clear header from close range. The English winger, who cost £50 million to join Chelsea, has yet to live up to his promise under manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Speaking about the winger’s miss on ESPN, Nicol said: “They bring Sterling on and he’s got the most incredible chance, probably seven, eight yards out, a free header, goalie to beat and puts it about 20 yards wide.

“He could have been the hero, becomes the villain once again. Every time you go to Stamford Bridge, you don’t know what you’re going to see. It’s just incredible.”

With alternatives like Mykhailo Mudryk in the team, Pochettino may decide to bench Sterling if his performance does not improve. In addition, opinions circulate about the club’s interest in Nico Williams, indicating a possible replacement for the failing winger.

Sterling’s poor performances could jeopardize his future at Chelsea, as Pochettino demands consistent performance from his players. The burden is on Sterling to come up and prove his worth, or risk being put off or perhaps sold by the club.
