Chelsea and Mason Mount to resume contract negotiations after World Cup

Chelsea and Mason Mount to resume contract negotiations after World Cup

If he shows great showing in Qatar, he could come back with greater confidence and a higher price tag in the market.

Chelsea and Mason Mount will resume contract negotiations after the World Cup 2022.

As per the reports to 90min (h/t Football.London), Chelsea are planning to restart contract extension talks with star player Mason Mount after the World Cup.

Talks of the Englishman’s contract extension have been going on for the last weeks. According to the fresh claim from the Guardian, the West London club are ready to give him a big pay rise in the deal.

However, the club has encountered some delays in negotiations. They would not continue the discussion during the World Cup.

The 23-year-old’s contract at Stamford Bridge will expire after the end of the current season. So, we are coming to a stage where Chelsea would be right to tie him up as soon as possible.

Co-owner Todd Boehly is planning to complete this deal before the end of the calendar year, but that has slowed down. He is eager to tie the player down though.

Mount has had a middling season so far, scoring two goals and six assists in 21 appearances across all competitions. He hasn’t been helped by the fact that the team is not playing well along with changing the manager right after the first few weeks of the campaign.

Going into the first World Cup with England would be a big moment for the Chelsea star. If he shows great showing in Qatar, he could come back with greater confidence and a higher price tag in the market.

Chelsea would hope that they get this contract negotiation done with, and not allow the top European clubs to start asking questions about the availability of the player in the transfer market.

Mount has been a Chelsea product through and through. Unless there has been a serious offer from somewhere else, he could be happy to get a big pay rise here with an extended contract.

Conor Gallagher delivers a damning verdict after Newcastle defeat

Conor Gallagher delivers a damning verdict after Newcastle defeat

Gallagher admitted that Newcastle deserved the win against Chelsea.

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher has delivered a damning verdict of defeat against Newcastle United.

While taking to the media (h/t Metro), Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher delivers a damning verdict and says that Newcastle United to win the game on Saturday.

The West London club suffered a third consecutive league defeat at the hands of the Magpies. Joe Willock scored in the first half to take Newcastle to third in the table before the World Cup break.

After a promising start to life under Graham Potter, things have taken a downturn in the last few weeks. As clubs into the mid-season World Cup break, Chelsea are one of the worst teams in the league on the current form table.

Admitting that Newcastle deserved the win and also asking more from the team, here’s Gallagher (h/t Metro):

“I don’t think we were good enough and I think Newcastle deserved to win. “We’ve got to be better and we need to take a look at ourselves. Physically, they were stronger than us and a lot more intense and that’s something we need to improve on.“If we want to be challenging for titles and things like that, then we need to be so much better and Newcastle showed that. So we need to look at ourselves because we know there’s a lot to improve on.”

Gallagher had a chance later in the game to equalise, but his shot lacked the venom to beat Nick Pope even if the direction was there. That finish kind of summarised Chelsea’s performance on the day. The midfielder is off to the World Cup with England now, hoping to lift the trophy in a month’s time.

It was always going to be a tough start for the new manager. He was given reigns on September 8 after the sacking of Thomas Tuchel. A few days after that, players dispersed for their international duties, only to come back and start the journey of 13 games in 43 days till the World Cup break.

Hence, not only deprived of an opportunity to spend the pre-season with the players, Potter had been more focused on getting a team together to challenge on the field irrespective of schedule intensity and injuries to key players. He himself did not get enough time in this period to stamp his system on the team.

The World Cup break may have come at the right time for Chelsea. It would allow the manager to reassess his strategies and come up with better ones when the league season resumes on Boxing Day.

Chelsea has lost three games in a row under new manager Graham Potter.

Graham Potter had quite a disheartening start to his Chelsea career as the club lost three games in a row in the Premier League.

He went nine matches unbeaten since his takeover in September but Potter’s debut season has unravelled since witnessing four defeats in the last five games.

Chelsea are currently eighth in the Premier League standings and former Blues striker Tony Cascarino believes most players are underperforming under the new manager.

He said on talkSPORT: “They’ve lost their way slightly.

“They don’t look like scoring goals in the centre-forward position, but I can’t believe how many players are playing so poorly for Chelsea. That is what’s really surprising.

“What I’m watching now is probably the worst Chelsea team that they’ve had over the last 10 years because I really don’t know what they’re about.”

He continued: “My one reservation when Graham Potter got the job was that he’s basically a pragmatic manager but never really had centre-forwards.

“I know he had Maupay and Welbeck, but they weren’t prolific for him. Nobody looks like scoring!”

Paul Merson believes England will not win World Cup due to excluding Reece James

Paul Merson believes England will not win World Cup due to excluding Reece James

Reece James has been Chelsea’s best player this season.

Paul Merson admits England will not win the World Cup due to excluding Chelsea defender Reece James.

Former Arsenal and Aston Villa midfielder Paul Merson believes that England will not win the World Cup due to excluding Chelsea right-back Reece James from the squad.

James suffered a knee injury against AC Milan in the Champions League last month. The 22-year-old was on the bench since this injury. Meanwhile, he worked hard on making a recovery in time for the tournament later this month.

There were speculations that he could still travel with the squad and feature in the latter stages of the tournament. But, Gareth Southgate opted against that and left the Chelsea defender completely out of his squad.

The former Gooner has criticised this decision and believes that England are not going to win the cup for excluding James. In his column for the Daily Star (h/t Daily Mail), the 54-year-old gave his criticism.

“If it was Harry Kane he would be going – what’s the difference? We aren’t going to win the World Cup without having James in the team. He is a shoo-in to start and if we took him, he plays in England’s team every day of the week. He is one of our best players. If it was Kane, they would say ‘right we’ll take him and use him after the group stages.”

James has been Chelsea’s best player this season. His performance, both as a right-back and right wing-back has received praise from pundits and opponents alike. The 22-year-old has if anything established himself as one of the best in the world in his position.

English manager Southgate has named three right-backs in his team for the World Cup this year. Arsenal defender Ben White has also been included and he has played regularly as a right-back for Mikel Arteta’s side this season.

England last won this tournament in 1966. They reached into the semifinal last time but failed short. The Three Lions are favourites after reaching into the final of Euro 2020. Italy is not part of this World Cup so they are entering as the best team in Europe.

Chelsea tipped to find replacement for Ziyech or Pulisic

Chelsea tipped to find replacement for Ziyech or Pulisic

The departure of Ziyech or Pulisic could see Chelsea re-enter the transfer market for some additional firepower.

Chelsea have been tipped to sign ‘another forward’ if they are able to ‘get rid of’ some of their current out-of-form stars by journalist Paul Brown.

The West London club managed to offload unwanted attacking trio Timo Werner, Romelu Lukaku and Callum Hudson-Odoi either on permanent or temporary deals over the summer, but further departures in the attacking third are expected.

Several attackers were unhappy with their lack of regular game time under Thomas Tuchel and were linked with a move away from the club as a result.

Football.London reported back in August that the Blues outfit were open to selling Hakim Ziyech should a suitable offer arrive for his services after already rejecting an offer from AC Milan.

The Manchester Evening News then claimed that Erik ten Hag was ‘met with resistance’ by the Manchester United hierarchy to bring this player to the club.

In the same month, The Athletic also said that Newcastle’s new owners were eyeing up several of Chelsea’s underused forwards as potential loan targets in the final weeks of the transfer window.

Christian Pulisic was one of the players that Newcastle were supposedly eyeing up, but a deal between the relevant parties couldn’t be reached in time.

Brown feels the potential departure of Ziyech or Pulisic could see Chelsea re-enter the transfer market for some additional firepower.

He said: “I do think that if they were able to get rid of some of the wingers that don’t seem to have a future there like Ziyech or Pulisic, I think it’s a certainty that Chelsea will go for another forward.

“Possibly one who can play in multiple roles so that you have cover in more than one position.”

Graham Potter plays down possibilities of signing players in January transfer window

Graham Potter plays down possibilities of signing players in January transfer window

Graham Potter is in the market for a striker and a midfielder.

Chelsea manager Graham Potter has played down the chances of signing players in January.

While talking in the press conference ahead of the Newcastle game (h/t Football.London), Chelsea manager Graham Potter has played down the possibility of the club signing players during the winter  transfer window.

Potter admits that there is more to come from the current group and his focus is on improving the performance of the team.

The West London club spent £250m+ in the summer window to add players in the defensive department and the forward line. The change in manager so early in the season did not aid in the creation of rhythm.

Here’s what Potter said when asked about signing players in January (h/t Football.London): “Not necessarily. I think there is more to come from the team we have, more to come from the group we have. As I say, we’ve got some key players out: Kante, Chilwell, James, and Fofana.”“These are key players, and a couple of them are replacing key players that left in the summer. So the point for me is that we can do better than we have. From a performance perspective, I think the team can function better, and that is where my focus is on.”

Usually, the January window is a tough market to crack the right deals, especially if a club is looking to add a key player to the squad. With a month-long season break, the January transfer window may well look like a summer window of a normal season.

Though Chelsea are in the market for a striker and a midfielder, Potter is probably right about wanting to get more out of the current crop of players.

Paul Merson pinpoints worrying sign for Chelsea ahead of Newcastle game

Paul Merson pinpoints worrying sign for Chelsea ahead of Newcastle game

Merson thinks Newcastle will hold Chelsea to a 1-1 draw this weekend.

Paul Merson has pinpointed one “worrying sign” for Chelsea and Graham Potter ahead of their Premier League game against Newcastle. Chelsea are winless in the domestic season from last 5 games, including 4 games in Premier League.

The North London club are going through a sticky patch at the moment as they have lost two straight games in the Premier League. These defeats came against Brighton & Hove Albion and Arsenal.

Graham Potter’s side was also beaten in midweek as Man City knocked them out of the League Cup with their 2-0 victory at the Etihad.

They are now seventh in the Premier League table, five points adrift of fourth-placed Tottenham with a game in hand. Newcastle’s encounter is their final game before the World Cup break.

A positive result on Saturday evening at St James’ Park would leave Newcastle in a great position to earn a spot in Europe.

Merson thinks Newcastle will hold Chelsea to a 1-1 draw this weekend, with Graham Potter’s constant tinkering a “worrying sign”.

“This is going to be a very interesting game. Chelsea were blown away by Arsenal last week. If they lose to Newcastle now, they may well find themselves 16 points away from the top of the Premier League table,” Merson wrote for Sportskeeda.

“Graham Potter did well for some time when he first came in, but he’s not Brighton’s manager anymore.

“He can’t afford to lose to Arsenal at home and then say that they were the better team on the day. You can do that with Brighton but at Chelsea, the fans will ask questions.

“If I asked a hundred Chelsea fans to name their best team for the game this weekend, not a single one of them would be sure. That’s not the case with Arsenal, and it’s a worrying sign for Chelsea.

“Potter can’t keep changing his team. He’s been there for nearly two months, and he still doesn’t know what his best team is.

“With Chelsea, I think the recent results have caught up with the changes at the club. If they lose this match, Liverpool would go past them, and I wouldn’t be shocked if that does happen.

“Thomas Tuchel never lost consecutive games as Chelsea’s manager in the Premier League. I can’t remember the last time Chelsea lost three league games on the trot, and it could happen this weekend. I do like Graham Potter, and I hope he gets it right.

“Newcastle are absolutely flying at the moment. If they win this game, they will fancy their chances in the top-four race. The name of the game is to beat lesser teams and avoid defeat against the big clubs.

“Newcastle have got to be careful and they need to make sure they don’t get caught up in the occasion. I think this game will end in a draw – I don’t see Chelsea winning, and that’s a big compliment to Newcastle.”

Conor Gallagher was included in the England World Cup squad travelling to Qatar.

The 22-year-old was left out of the Nations League squad but he continued to play for the U-21s and improved under new Chelsea manager Graham Potter.

England manager Gareth Southgate explains his decision to include the 22-year-old midfielder in the 26-man World Cup squad.

Southgate explained: “We were really pleased with how he responded at being out of our squad.

“He went into the Under-21s and performed really well. His mentality was excellent. It is a good example that if you approach it in that way that there’s always a route back with us.

“He is fantastic at pressing the ball. I think there are going to be moments in these games where we are going to need different attributes. He is not as experienced with us as some of the others. But he has an impact in games.

“He has got a goal threat. He, when you talk about midfielders, do they score goals, stop goals and create goals. He does a bit of all of that actually.“

PSG planning to sign Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante on free transfer

PSG could face competition from Tottenham Hotspur for Kante’s signing.

Paris Saint-Germain are eyeing a move for Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante on a free transfer next summer, reports BILD journalist Christian Falk.

Doubts linger over the Frenchman’s future at Stamford Bridge, with his current deal expiring in the summer of 2023.

The 31-year-old has been sidelined since August due to a hamstring injury, and he will miss the World Cup 2022 in Qatar this month.

Les Parisiens are said to be keeping tabs on the former Leicester midfielder’s situation ahead of a potential free transfer next summer.

Ligue 1 giants revamped their midfield in the summer transfer window with the additions of Fabian Ruiz, Renato Sanches, Vitinha and Carlos Soler.

Football director Luis Campos is looking to add more solidity by signing Kante.

But, PSG could face competition from Tottenham Hotspur for Kante’s signing, with Antonio Conte interested in a reunion with the 31-year-old.

Conte wants to replicate the successful Chelsea partnership with Kante at Spurs, with the pair winning the Premier League title in the 2016/17 season.

Graham Potter’s side will travel to Tyneside on the back of five domestic games without a win.

Graham Potter has tasked Chelsea with getting their season back on track in Saturday’s Premier League clash at Newcastle.

The North London club found the exit door from the Carabao Cup after a 2-0 defeat against Manchester City, as second-half goals from Riyad Mahrez and Julián Álvarez helped the hosts through at Etihad.

Despite the defeat, the Chelsea manager saw enough from his experimental 3-4-3 line-up to offer encouragement for the future.

“We’re concerned when we don’t get the results we want,” Potter said afterwards, per club media.

“Our performances have not been what we want either in the last couple of games. Tonight was a big step in terms of how we want to play, and we can get confidence from that.

“It’s a big game at Newcastle, 5.30 [pm] on the TV, it’ll be a fantastic atmosphere. They’re doing really well, so it’ll be a tough game, but we have to try and go there and get the three points.”

Chelsea will travel to Tyneside on the back of five domestic games without a win.

The Magpies have been one of the surprise packages of the season thus far. Eddie Howe’s men sit in third spot, four places and six points clear of this weekend’s visitors.
