Former Chelsea striker warns Lampard about January transfer spend

Former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton has warned Lampard about spending money during the upcoming January transfers.

On Friday, Chelsea’s ban on transfers was lifted – thus, they have the option to participate in the upcoming January transfer window. But the question here is, should Lampard be spending a lot?

According to Chris Sutton, Lampard must be careful about tarnishing his image with the fans which he has built over the year. By signing new players, youngsters like Tammy Abraham, Fikayo Tomori, Mason Mount and Reece James could take a backseat, undoing all of Lampard’s good work.

As for a lot of managers, you spend and you spend it can put you under major pressure,’ Sutton admits.

‘It has fallen beautifully for Frank. The hypothetical question was, if he did have money would Abraham etc. get their chance? I understand other Chelsea managers, the pressure is on.

‘If the expectation is to challenge for a league title, we know the pressure managers are under because it has been a crazy season for sackings, then in that respect if you had the opportunity to buy an established international who has played at the highest level or should I give a player who has shown real promise in the development squad or out on loan?

‘You would usually trust the tried and tested. This whole scenario has worked out.’
