Reece James expected to be on the sidelines for a significant period.

The Chelsea academy graduate picked up a hamstring injury in the club’s 2-0 defeat against Everton last week.

The full-back is now expected to set for a spell on the sidelines and surgery could be needed to treat the injury.

James had his last two seasons blighted by injury troubles and his absence could drastically affect Chelsea’s defence in the second-half of the campaign.

The latest setback could force him out of action for at least two months which would hamper his spot in the England squad for next summer’s European Championship.

Fabrizio Romano reveals the club and player will make an informed decision this week.

“A final decision on whether or not the full-back will undergo surgery will be made within the next few days — that’s the plan internally,” he wrote in his exclusive SubStack column.

“Make no mistake though, for sure Chelsea are worried. They want James to be in the best possible condition to perform at the highest levels — the player wants the same, but this is not the case at the moment.”

Chelsea now would have to survive without the club captain and Marc Cucurella who is sidelined until February 2024.
