Chelsea are now ready to accelerate contract talks with Conor Gallagher.

The Chelsea academy graduate was expected to leave in the summer transfer window but he has now been established as one of the key personnel under manager Mauricio Pochettino.

The manager decided to retain him in the summer and the head coach has made him third-choice captain in the squad.

With Reece James out injured, Gallagher was given the chance to wear the armband several times in this campaign.

He has been preferred in the team sheet alongside two expensive midfield acquisitions, Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo.

Gallagher has entered the final two years of his contract and negotiations are expected to open before the January transfer window commences.

Last month, the 23-year-old midfielder confessed he was unsure about his future at Chelsea in the summer.

“Before I met Pochettino, I wasn’t sure [on my future] because there was so much happening, so many players leaving and coming in,” the midfielder said. “I was buzzing to play under him and stay at Chelsea and prove myself to the club and fans more this season.”
