Diego Moreira, a Portugal Under-21 international, has joined Chelsea from Benfica
Moreira, 18, joined Benfica from Standard Liege in 2020 and was a member of the team that won the UEFA Youth League in 2022. Moreira, who made his senior debut in May 2022, was a regular for Benfica B last season. The 17-year-old winger is a member of Portugal’s squad for the European Under-21 Championship, where they will face England in the quarterfinals on Sunday.
Moreira’s arrival on a free transfer follows the arrivals of strikers Nicolas Jackson from Villarreal and Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig, as well as the permanent acquisition of Ruben Loftus-Cheek from AC Milan.
Loftus-Cheek’s exit is one of several recent departures as new Blues manager Mauricio Pochettino restructures his squad ahead of the season’s start. Arsenal signed midfielder Kai Havertz, while N’Golo Kante, Kalidou Koulibaly, and custodian Edouard Mendy all went to Saudi Arabia.
He is anticipated to join the Blues’ academy with Matos, who began his career as a forward but gradually evolved into a central midfielder near the end of his stint at Norwich.
Chelsea had planned to make a big splash by signing Arsenal’s Ethan Nwaneri, whose schoolboy contract with the Gunners expired at the end of June. An offer was offered to the Premier League’s youngest player, but he declined.
