Chelsea blocked the transfer of Malang Sarr on deadline day

Chelsea defender Malang Sarr was close to an exit on the deadline day.

The French defender joined on a free transfer from Nice in 2020 and spent the last season on loan at Monaco.

Since joining the Blues, Sarr has been in a total of 21 matches and failed to establish himself in the first-team squad.

There was a buy option included in his loan deal to Monaco but the French club refused to activate it.

Despite the managerial change last summer, Sarr hasn’t featured for the Blues and he is not a part of Mauricio Pochettino’s plans for the remainder of the campaign.

The 25-year-old defender came close to joining French club Le Havre on the deadline day but Chelsea failed to get a deal over the line.

Both clubs failed to reach an agreement for the £100,000 per week defender and now Sarr would have to fight for his place for the next six months.

His contract with Chelsea expires in the summer of 2025 and Sarr would want to secure a permanent move away from Stamford Bridge when the season concludes.

The Blues have a bloated squad at the moment and need to get rid of several fringe players in the summer.
