Saints boss Ralph Hasenhittl has backed Timo Werner to unlock his true potential.

The 53-year old manager has worked with Werner when he was in charge of RB Leipzig and still maintains a strong relationship with the German forward.

His lack of goals in his past 20 games in all competitions was ended when he scored in Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Newcastle on Monday.

Frank Lampard was given advice by a rival Premier League manager on how to unlock Werner’s true potential.

“I know Timo very well and I have seen him in situations where he was not good,” Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl explained.

“Most of the time when I have seen this is because the game doesn’t fit to him. The team didn’t play in the way he can bring his best on the pitch, I think.

“He is definitely a player where you have to adapt your game on him. If you do this, he will give you everything you need from a striker. But therefore, he has some qualities you really have to focus on.

The Austrian added: “You really need to bring him into his best position so he can bring his strength on the pitch and then, for me, he is one of the best strikers in Europe.”
