Sources claim that Frank Lampard was not too keen on adding Kai Havertz.

BBC reported that the German playmaker’s signature cost Chelsea £71m last summer.

But the marquee signing has so far failed to establish himself at the Bridge, putting up disappointing performances one after the other. Havertz was a star at Bayer Leverkusen but he looks like a shadow of his prolific self in the Bundesliga.

Dean Jones on Simon Phillips’ podcast said, “Lampard didn’t necessarily want Kai Havertz – I’m not saying he would have turned him down but it wasn’t like ‘please go and get me Kai Havertz’.”

This might be hard to believe given the hype there was around Havertz’ arrival. Lampard welcomed the German, praising his qualities ever step of the way. However, when it came to actually fitting him into his squad, it turned out to be a challenge.

Now, Chelsea sit eighth in the table with Lampard’s reign tipped to be over soon. Jones continued, “Chelsea need to be in there in the top 4, but Abramovich when he’s spending this much money, he’s not expecting only to qualify for the CL, he wants to show Liverpool and Man City that Chelsea are back to make a statement. Being that far off the top is worrying.”

There are plenty of personnel who are being lined up to be Lampard’s replacement.

“Thomas Tuchel is quite a realistic one, that’s one I’ve heard the most on. I get the impression he has been sounded out by intermediaries.”
