Xabi Alonso has acknowledged that he made an error in judgement by rushing Moises Caicedo back from injury too quickly, following Chelsea’s 2-1 Premier League defeat to Arsenal.

Xabi Alonso Admits ‘Mistake’ Over Moises Caicedo Injury After Arsenal Defeat

The influential midfielder missed Chelsea’s opening league fixture against Fulham and was also absent for the Carabao Cup victory over Luton Town.

Caicedo finally made his seasonal debut during Chelsea’s thrilling win against Brighton last weekend, entering the pitch in the 68th minute as a replacement for Pedro Neto.

However, the Ecuadorian international’s comeback lasted merely 14 minutes before he limped off injured, making way for summer signing Valentin Barco.

The setback subsequently ruled Caicedo out of Sunday’s crucial clash with Arsenal, where Alonso’s side suffered a narrow defeat.

Alonso offered a reassuring update on the midfielder’s condition but candidly admitted responsibility for the situation.

“It is not longer term but it’s about assessing the risk,” Alonso explained when questioned about Caicedo’s status after the Arsenal match.

“Probably, last week, we took him too early and I don’t want to make the same mistake again.”

The Chelsea manager refused to use the absence of key players as an excuse for the defeat, instead praising his squad’s overall performance.

“It’s easy after defeats to talk about the players that you are missing. I’m not going to go there, I am happy with the players that we have,” he stated.

Reflecting on the match itself, Alonso described a contest of shifting momentum.

Chelsea started brightly, scoring first before Arsenal applied intense pressure for a 15-minute period, eventually equalising.

The second goal proved decisive, with Alonso acknowledging defensive lapses while emphasising his team’s fighting spirit.

“It’s a defeat, we are disappointed, it needs to hurt, but it needs to hurt in a positive way because it’s just game three,” he added.

With Caicedo expected to recover fully, Alonso will hope his cautious approach going forward prevents further injury setbacks to his influential midfielder.
