Will Marcos Alonso leave Chelsea?

Marcos Alonso joined the Blues back in the summer of 2016.

Many thought he will not fit the club strategy and size given his prior experience of only playing in small clubs and failing in England before with Bolton Wanderers. However, Antonio Conte applied a 3 man back system which saw Alonso play as a wingback and that possibly unlocked his best position.

He could romp up at will and deliver in interesting balls while sometimes making runs into the box himself. He set himself up as a free kick specialist and had the best return in terms of goals for a defender last season.

However, with Conte leaving and Sarri coming, Chelsea switched back to a 4 man back and it meant Alonso’s defensive frailties were exposed. He could not keep up with the wingers and overall Sarri started favouring Emerson due to better performances as the season dragged on.

It has come to a point where Alonso could be on his way out of Chelsea after this season and the defender himself has fueled the rumours further by saying that he would be open to a move should it seem fit.

“I am very happy here but we will see what happens this summer,” he told the Evening Standard.

There is always talk (like this). Is it a compliment? Yes. It means I’m doing well if other teams are trying to get in touch.

“But first of all I’m focussing on the final. I am very happy to have four more years here and hopefully I will stay many more years here.”

Fans are split on his decision while some want him to leave and others want a squad back up. Let’s see what happens!
